Atta Kim deconstructs the conventional definition of photography where it is regarded as a tool to capture a moment, implying instead a paradigm of myriad time in a picture by making use of diverse photographic skills. An old theme of the artist as well as the noted topic — exploration into the essence of an existence – is represented in his works based on his unique philosophical approach.
‘The Museum Project’, focusing on the relationship of ‘I’ and the others, has progressed to the series ‘On-Air Project’, which conveys the author’s profound subject matter, ‘disappearance’ (that every existence inevitably disappears). In his work, based on his distinguished method of 8-hour long exposure, different city scenes are portrayed as if they were disappearing amongst the speed. In the ‘Indala Series’, in which the author uses the method of superimposition, sceneries are completely disseminated to the extent where they seem like an abstract art. It is the author’s ultimate intention to render his idea that even though it appears that numerous elements become one-ness and eventually disappear, in fact, each remain in relation to another without losing the intrinsic value.
Photography, to the artist, is a medium through which the essence – the light – is visually conveyed in the form of color. Through his works, the artist provides the audience with a chance to ponder upon the essence of existence, and raises a fundamental question on the nature of human identity.
Atta Kim participated in the 25th San Paulo Biennale representing Korean Pavilion in 2002, and in the same year, Kim was included in the list of World 100 photographers held by Phaidon Press. In 2004, he published his photographic records The Museum Project. This was a remarkable event since Kim was the first Korean photographer to publish his photographic records from most prestigious photography publisher in New York, Aperture Foundation. Furthermore, he became globally renowned in the history of photography after the success of solo exhibition as the first Asian photographer at International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York, 2006. In 2008, his solo exhibition was held at Rodin Gallery (currently Plateau Samsung Museum of Art). In the following year, he was invited to the 53rd Venice Biennale for the special exhibition. Kim also participated in several group exhibitions in Daegu Museum of Art(2011), Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art(2011), Gwangju Museum of Art(2012) and Busan Museum of Art(2013). In 2014, he held a solo show, titled, Re-Atta, Part 1: On-Air Project at 313 Art Project, Seoul. His works have been included in numerous public and corporate collections at institutions including Microsoft Art Collection of Bill Gates, Washington, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,The Los Angeles County Museum of Art,National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, Art Sonje Museum, Seoul, etc.

김아타는 순간을 기록하는 도구에 불과했던 사진의 전통적 해석에서 벗어나, 다양한 사진 기법을 활용해 시간의 패러다임을 사진 한 장에 담아낸다. 작가는 작품의 오랜 주제이자 화두이기도 한 존재의 본질을 그만의 철학적 접근으로 탐구하며, 작품 속에서 자신의 시각을 풀어낸다.
나와 타인의 관계에 대해 주목했던 작가의 The Museum Project는 ‘존재하는 모든 것은 사라진다.’는 소멸의 메시지를 전달하는 ‘On-Air Project’로 발전한다. 8시간의 장 노출을 통해 표현된 세계 여러 도시들은 움직임의 속도에 비례해 마치 사라진 것처럼 사진 속에서 표현되며, 중첩을 기법을 활용한 ‘인달라 시리즈’에서는 완전히 해체되어, 하나의 추상화처럼 표현된다. 작가는 수 많은 개체가 하나 되어 소멸하는듯 하지만 사실은 각각의 정체성을 가진 채 관계하고 있다는 것을 궁극적으로 말하고자 한다.
김아타에게 있어 사진은 빛이라는 본질을 색이라는 매개를 통해 시각적으로 전달하는 매체이다. 작가는 본인의 작업을 통해 관객들에게 존재의 본질을 사유할 기회를 제공하며, 또 인간 본연의 정체성에 대한 근원적인 의문을 제기한다.
김아타는 2002년 제 25회 상파울루 비엔날레의 한국관 대표작가로 참가하였으며, 같은 해, 런던 Phaidon Press에서 선정하는 ‘세계 100대 사진 작가’에 이름을 올렸다. 세계적 권위의 사진집 전문 출판사인 뉴욕의 Aperture Foundation에서 한국인 최초로 2004년에 사진집 ‘The Museum Project’를 발간하였고, 2006년에는 뉴욕의 세계적인 사진 미술관인 ICP(International Center for Photography)에서 동양인 최초의 개인전을 하면서 세계 사진의 역사에 이름을 올렸다. 또한 2009년 제 53회 베니스 비엔날레 초청 특별전과 2008년 리움 삼성 미술관 로댕갤러리 (현 플라토 미술관)에서 개인전을 열기도 했다. 그밖에도 대구시립미술관(2011), 삼성 리움미술관(2011), 광주시립미술관(2012), 부산시립미술관(2013) 등에서 그룹전에 참여했다. 2014년 초에는 313아트프로젝트에서 6년만의 국내 첫 개인전을 개최하였다. 김아타의 작품은 빌게이츠의 Microsoft Art Collection, 휴스턴 미술관(The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), LA카운티 미술관(The Los Angeles County Museum of Art), 국립 현대 미술관, 삼성 미술관 리움, 아트 선재 미술관 등 국내외 권위 있는 미술관과 기업 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
