“I seek for definition and complete form of arts from my works, and while doing so, I pose critical thoughts on contemporary art scene… I believe a self-comforting act of obsessive organizing habit is highly similar to an act of creating arts. I have recently worked on visualizing such behavior aesthetically”.
-From Artist’s Note

Jungpyo Hong is a sculptor and installation artist living and working in Seoul, Korea. He uses various media, including wood, plaster, steel, resin, acrylic, and so on, to create the works in perfect state. He fully reflects himself in his works and seeks for the definition of arts in his working process. While Hong recognizes limits of reality that restricts him from being perfect, he sets his own rules, or values, and approaches to modified perfection.

One of main themes Hong focuses on is a sense of inferiority, which arises from his unachievable desire of being perfect. He creates arts to overcome the limits he faces in reality and consoles himself in working process. He also finds similar self-comforting effects in his obsessive organizing habit. He contemplates the meaningless feeling of compulsion, or inferiority, and reinterprets them through simple, repeated action. Hong establishes his own standards and transforms objects according to the rules. Modified objects diverge from conventional shapes and lose functionality. As the transfigured objects depart from ordinary forms, they move from integrity as well, but they are considered to be perfect in the perspective of the rules artist sets. Similarly, Hong implies his incapability of creating perfect condition. Instead of removing or hiding traces left on the works due to his inability, he considers them as innate features. He finds aesthetic sense from them and adds originality to the works, while resisting against the standardized perspective.

Receiving Bachelor and Master degrees in Fine Arts from Hong Ik University, Seoul, Jungpyo Hong have participated in various residency programs around the world and won Joongang Art Prize in 2004. Hong has held solo exhibitions at 313 Art Project, Seoul (2021, 2017), Kyoto HRD Fine Art (2018), Post Territory Ujeongguk, Seoul (2016), Can Foundation, Seoul (2013), and others. He has also joined group exhibitions at Buk Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, Hanmi Gallery, London, and so on.
