“It is the space itself which I consider the most significant in my artwork. Space, instead of being set as a backdrop, is equally important as the artwork. Hence I try to establish balance between the work and the space. I want the original environment or scenery to remain as it is. I just intend to create a minimum ‘action’ – like a subtle flow of air, or a wind softly brushing over the skin without being noticed, or an irretraceable impression of a passerby.”

Kiwon Park is a Korean installation artist renowned for using common raw materials to emphasize diverse spatial elements, including space, emptiness, air, and light. He represented Korea Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 2005 and has been awarded the ‘Korea Artist Prize’ in 2010 by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Park was influenced by Post-Minimalism that focuses on pure property of media to create distinctive site-specific installation works. He especially pays attention to the history of a place and its relationship with the surrounding environment to bring the works into a part of the space. Park also encourages audiences to break out from a fixed, passive position and to engage actively in the works, as he believes the work is completed by the interaction with the audience.

Park further explores spatiality in his painting series Width. As he perceives three-dimensional space as delicate amalgam of two-dimensional surfaces, he depicts a core layer of a space he has visited on a canvas or paper. Park divides the canvas into two or three surfaces and fills each area with the movements of spatial elements he notices from the site. He applies minimalistic approach and paints each work with single hue, reflecting his unique insight of spatiality. The paintings in the series harmonize with one another and the environment and send dynamic energy into the static pace. As Park considers environment as an essential element of his installation works, he creates paintings that interact with the environment and take part in completing the space.

Park’s solo exhibitions include 313 Art Project, Seoul (2019, 2016); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (2010); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2006); and Arko Art Center (2006). He has also participated in group exhibitions including Suwon Museum of Art Art Space Gwanggyo (2020); Cheongju Museum of Art (2019); OCI Museum (2018); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (2016); Amore Pacific Museum of Art, Project Yongsan, Seoul (2016); Esprit Dior, DDP, Seoul (2015); Kumho Museum of Art, Seoul (2015); 313 Art Project, Seoul (2014); Galleria Continua, Les Moulins, France (2014-15); East Side Gallery Berlin, Berlin (2014); Busan Museum of Art, Busan (2013); Korean Pavilion, The 51st Venice Biennale (2005).

 

“나는 공간 자체를 중요하게 생각한다. 작품을 위한 공간으로 만들기보다 공간 속의 작품, 즉 공간과 작품이 중립적이기를 원한다. 나는 이미 만들어진 환경이나 풍경은 그대로 있고, 그 위에 ‘미세한 공기의 흐름’, 팔의 솜털이 움직이듯 한 미세한 바람처럼 어떤 자극도 없어 보이며, 방금 지나친 한 행인의 기억할 수 없는 모습과 같은 최소한의 ‘움직임’을 원한다.”

박기원은 일상적 재료를 공간이 가지는 특수성과 연결하여, 공간성 자체를 작품의 소재이자 주제로 활용하는 한국의 대표적인 설치 미술가이다. 제13회 중앙 미술 대상을 수상한 이래, 시대에 편승하지 않는 독창적인 작업 양식을 선보이며 한국 현대 설치 미술의 새로운 지평을 열었다. 그는 원자재가 가지는 순수한 물성에 주목했던 후기 미니멀리즘의 영향을 받았으며, 재료의 원형적 특성을 살린 단순한 형태의 설치물을 제작하여 다양한 장소적 내러티브를 표현하였다. 작가는 공간이 가지는 역사, 그리고 주변 환경과의 관계에 초점을 두고 작업을 전개하였으며, 본인의 작품을 공간의 한 부분으로서 완성하고자 하였다.

박기원의 작업에서 관객은 작품의 완성에 관여하는 또 하나의 주체로 등장한다. 그는 관객이 작품을 감상하는 수동적인 존재가 아님을 인식하고, 본인의 작업에 더 적극적으로 뛰어들길 권장하며, 궁극적으로 그들이 공간과의 상호 작용을 통해 작품을 완성해 나갈 수 있게 독려한다. 그런 의미에서 박기원의 작업은 작품의 외적 요소로 인식되던 재료와 재료가 작품으로 발전되어 가는 과정, 작품이 공간 위에 재현되는 전시 형태, 그리고 관객 모두를 작품의 내적 주제로 발전시키고 있으며, 과거에 통용되던 제한적인 작품 해석 방식을 해체한다.

2010년 국립 현대 미술관에서 올해의 작가로 선정된 박기원은 313 아트프로젝트 (2019, 2016), 과천 국립 현대 미술관 (2010), 마드리드 Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (2006), 아르코미술관 (2006) 등 국내외 유수 기관에서 개인전을 가졌다. 그룹전으로는 수원시립미술관 아트 스페이스 광교 (2020), 청주시립미술관 (2019), OCI 미술관 (2018), 과천 국립현대미술관 (2016), 아모레퍼시픽 미술관 용산 프로젝트 APMAP (2016), 서울 금호미술관 (2015), 서울 Esprit Dior, DDP (2015), 313 아트프로젝트 (2014), 프랑스 물랭 Galleria Continua (2014-15), 베를린 East Side Gallery (2014), 부산 시립미술관 (2013) 전시에 참여했다. 2005년에는 제51회 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 전시의 참여 작가로 선정된 바 있으며, 2000년에는 광주 비엔날레 특별 전시에 참여하였다.
