313 ART PROJECT has been actively engaging in introducing artists both domestic and foreign and bridging the art scenes. It is the gallery’s aim to focus especially on contemporary Korean artists in order to extend their global presence and elevate the value of Korean contemporary art. B-Side marks the first exhibition of 2015.
“B-Side” commonly refers to the reverse side in album production either of analogue record or double-sided disc. While the main part of album is contained in the A-side, the music that either represents the musical competence or reflects the individuality is included in the B-side. This exhibition has its significance in shedding new light on the B-side, the reverse side of various exhibitions 313 ART PROJECT has put on over the past five years. In a period where there has been growing international spotlight on Korean art, the exhibition showcases globally active artists. Seo-Bo Park, Ufan Lee, Sang-Hwa Chung are representatives of Korean monochromatic painting (Dansaekhwa), who aim for sublimation of spirituality and interiority through repetitive action. The works of Nam June Paik, who stood in the center of Fluxus as a pioneer of video art will be displayed as well as those of Korean contemporary artists such as Ikjoong Kang and Tschang-Yeol Kim.
By showing the works of the artists who have established the foundation of contemporary Korean art in one space, 313 ART PROJECT aims to retrace the history of Korean art and have the exhibition be a chance for a leap forward in the international art scene.
313아트프로젝트는 국외의 다양한 작가들을 국내 미술계에 소개하고 역량 있는 한국 작가들을 해외에 선보이며, 국내외 미술계를 연결하는 교량 역할을 하고 있다. 특히 동시대 한국 작가에 주목하여 그들을 세계 무대의 반석 위에 올려 놓음으로써 한국의 현대 미술이 가지는 가치를 알리기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이러한 의미의 연장선상에서 313아트프로젝트는 2015년의 시작을 알리는 첫 전시로 ‹B-SIDE›전을 연다.
‘B 사이드’는 음악 용어로 흔히 음반이 아날로그 레코드나 양면 디스크로 제작될 때 그 후면을 일컫는다. 음악인이 심혈을 기울여 만든 대표 곡들이 A 사이드에 포함된다면 B 사이드에는 주로 그의 음악적 역량을 대표하는 곡이나 개성을 반영하는 곡들이 수록된다. 이번 전시는 313아트프로젝트가 지난 5년간, 다양한 전시를 통해 지향해 온 A 사이드의 뒷면인 B사이드를 재조명한다는 데 의의가 있다. 한국 미술에 대한 세계적 관심이 점점 더 높아지고 있는 가운데 기획되었으며, 국제 무대에서 활발하게 활동하며 한국 미술의 우수함을 보여주는 작가들의 작품들로 구성된다. 특히 비정형 운동을 지향하며 반복적 행위를 통한 물질의 정신 세계로의 승화를 목표로 하는 한국 단색화의 대표 작가 박서보, 이우환, 정상화를 중심으로, 플럭서스의 중심에 있었던 비디오 아트의 선구자 백남준의 작품이 전시를 통해 소개 된다. 또 강익중, 김창렬 등 한국의 대표적인 현대미술 작가들의 작품도 포함된다.
313아트프로젝트는 이 전시를 통해 한국 미술사의 비옥한 밑거름이 되어준 작가들의 작품을 한 공간에서 보여줌으로써, 지금의 현대 미술이 성장해 온 과정을 되짚고, 국제 무대에서의 발전적인 도약을 위한 계기로 만들고자 한다.
