Florian & Michael Quistrebert

Shining Mud

April 18 – May 18, 2019

313 Art Project is pleased to present Shining Mud, Florian & Michael Quistrebert’s debut solo exhibition in Asia. This exhibition showcases a total of 17 works, of which includes pieces from their quintessential Overlight series, which has previously been introduced to the public through their breakthrough “The Light of the Light” exhibition at Palais de Tokyo.

Over the years, the brothers have dedicated their time to experimenting with the limits of perception, matter, and concept. They explore past the boundaries of mediums defined by art history, leading them to build their own artistic vocabulary. Always on the lookout for newly emerging schools, movements, and ideas, the brothers exaggerate the use of matter to create a figuration of abstract art. Shining Mud collectively presents the Quistrebert brothers’ most renowned and newest works to highlight their artistic insight.

The Overlight series that the artists have worked on since 2013 depicts the brothers’ proficiency in manipulating the medium of light. Modeling paste poured over the canvas creates an overflow of curves and ripples, on top of which iridescent car paint coats the surface. A direct source of light in the form of LED light bulbs are embedded into the work, shedding light on the reflective surface, from which the viewers can catch glimpses of their own faces and movement. The celestial quality of the gold and silver Overlight works studded with the star-like LED lights entices the viewers to take a closer look.

Zen, the newest of the Quistrebert brothers’ series, have stemmed from their previous Rakes series, which were first introduced in 2016 as paintings of geometric patterns and lines drawn through thick white slabs of paste on canvas. The works are reminiscent of the traditional Japanese Zen gardening rituals that aim to achieve spiritual enlightenment and also of the physical labor tilers undergo in construction sites. The two distinct gestures binds together to form identical beauty. Through the repetition of lines and curves, the paintings resonate with the visual echoes and expand into cognitive depth by connecting the two different sources inspired by geometric patterns.

The video work titled Endless Tunnel is among the newest of their oeuvre, which is scheduled to be exhibited at the Center for Contemporary Creation(CCC OD), Tours, France after its exhibition in Shining Mud at 313. Divided into 2 to 4 channels, the rectangular frames of the screen approach the end of each tunnel, which challenges the viewers’ attempt to visually focus on symmetry.

Florian and Michael Quistrebert perceptually unarm the viewers’ obsession with interpreting artwork and physically expands the boundaries of sensation to simultaneously cause chaos and ecstasy. The brothers state that the ones who complete the artworks are the artists themselves, not the viewers; their aim is to disarm the viewer’s resistance in interpretation and enchant them in entirety.

The diverse artistic spectrum of Florian and Michael Quistrebert ranges from paintings to video installations. They were nominated in 2014 for Prix Marcel Duchamp for their renowned innovative works and ideas. The brothers subsequently won the NNG Award during Art Rotterdam in the Netherlands, 2017, and World Masters of Projection Mapping Award in Amsterdam, 2018. Their past solo exhibitions include Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016); Juliette Jongma, Amsterdam (2016); and Dundee Contemporary Arts, UK (2015). They were subject to multiple group exhibitions, including Plateau/FRAC Île-de-France, Paris (2015); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); Galeries Nationales du Grand-Palais, Paris (2013); LACE, Los Angeles (2013); and Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris (2012).

World Masters of Projection Mapping Award를 수상했다.
