313 Art Project is pleased to present Green Peace, a solo exhibition by Andrew Dadson, consisting of new works of various mediums including painting, photography, and painted live plants.

Dadson’s works investigate the natural environment, both urban and rural. All works employ the enactment of painting to consider the various markings humans leave upon the environment. Notions of borders and (re)framing emerge in his works as he uses the edges of the canvas, literal fences, and empty spaces, to suggest an infinite expansion beyond the painted gestures that often spill over and extend these very borders.

The paintings included in Green Peace mimic the landscape’s natural and evolving formations through Dadson’s artistic process. The works often begin with a drawing, and through layers of paint and sometimes sand/silt, geographical identifiers begin to emerge: repeating brushstrokes become islands, spherical shapes are reminiscent of moons, and undulating lines appear as rolling waves. These painted layers often consist of an array of colours followed by a final coating of monochrome paint. Some colours penetrate the painted surface revealing their presence, while others remain hidden beneath newer layers; regardless of what the final layer does or does not cover, in essence, all layers are always present. This notion of layers and invisibility offer an alternative lens through which we can view the environment where visibility only conveys a partial story.

The photographic works in Green Peace were created in the summer of 2019 in Vancouver, Canada within the boundaries of an empty lot. The seemingly starved landscape of gravel and rubble became the resilient home to various unplanted species, or “weeds,” and in turn, new and emerging ecosystems. Within this lot, Dadson focused on small sections of individual plant species, coating them in coloured earth pigments. The larger-than-life inkjet prints enable an opportunity to see “weeds” as their own jungle terrains of intertwined stems, leaves, buds, and fibers. These images become emblematic of the perseverance of nature and remind us that without human intervention, wildlife will continue to thrive.

Green Peace also includes several painted live plants within the gallery. Dadson has often painted live plants in earth pigments, masking the green stems and leaves, and allowing the plants to discard their painted layer over varied periods of time. In Green Peace, Dadson employs paint with a paintbrush, which enables a certain transparency through the thin, loose strokes.

The exhibition title Green Peace evokes an ideology whose mission pushes towards environmental activism. Dadson merges alongside and beyond this by focusing on temporal natural processes such as plant growth, rippling tides, and cycling moons in addition to human-induced marks. These marks scar and shift this landscape to consider what a sustainable earthy future might involve, and what shifting and unassuming landscapes can reveal to us.

Andrew Dadson (b. 1980) graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2003 and currently lives and works in Vancouver. Dadson has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions most recently at Unit 17, Vancouver (2019), Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2017), Polygon Gallery, Vancouver (2017), Galleria Franco Noero, Turin (2017) and as part of Art Parcours, Basel (2016). In 2019 Dadson has upcoming solo exhibitions in Toronto, Canada and is currently a finalist for the The Artisti per Frescobaldi Art Prize 2020 held in Tuscany, Italy.

313 아트프로젝트는 2019년 11월 6일부터 12월 20일까지 현대 회화 작가 앤드류 다드슨의 신작을 모아 아시아 최초로 개인전 <Green Peace>를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 그의 회화 작품과 사진, 그리고 화분에 담긴 나무들에 색상을 입히는 등 다양한 실험을 통해, 여러 가지 매체를 활용하여 도시와 교외 지역의 자연환경을 탐구한다. 작가의 모든 작품은 회화의 형식을 취하며 인간이 자연에 남기는 흔적에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 캔버스의 가장자리, 그 틀의 경계와 빈 공간을 다루는 그의 작품은 경계와 경계와의 재구성에 대한 관념을 드러내며, 바로 그 경계를 넘고 확장한 그의 회화적 방식은, 단순한 표현 방식 이상으로 무한대의 가능성을 제시한다.

<Green Peace>에 전시되는 그의 회화 작업은, 자연의 진화하는 과정을 재창조하였다. 그 작품들은 주로 드로잉으로 시작하여 겹겹이 쌓인 물감이나 그 안에 때때로 흙, 모래를 층으로 덮어 지형과 같은 모습을 드러내고자 한다. 반복된 붓질은 섬이 되고, 원형으로 도드라진 부분은 달을 떠오르게 하며, 물결치는 선들은 굽이치는 파도의 모습을 보인다. 여러 색의 조합으로 형성된 이 유화 층은 단색의 표면으로 마무리된다. 어떤 색들은 그 칠해진 표면에 투과되어 보이고 다른 색들은 이후의 층들 아래에서 모습을 감춘다. 근본적으로 마지막 표면 작업이 무엇을 뒤덮건 드러내건, 모든 층은 항상 그 자리에 존재한다. 층들이 형성되며 가려지는 영역에 대한 관념은 우리가 보이는 자연에만 의미를 부여하는 방식에 대한 새로운 대안을 제시한다.

이번 전시에 선보이는 그의 사진 작품은 지난여름 캐나다 밴쿠버에 위치한 빈 주차장 공간 안에서 작업 되었다. 자갈과 부서진 돌무더기로 덮인, 보기에도 메마른 평지는, 여러 종류의 잡초, 스스로 자란 식물들이 자리를 되찾아가는 자생지가 되어 새롭게 성장하는 생태계를 형성했다. 그 공간 안에서, 그는 각기 다른 식물들이 모여있는 작은 영역에 집중하며, 흙에서 추출한 피그먼트로 식물들을 착색했다. 실제 크기보다 더 크게 프린트한 이 작업은 잡초들의 줄기와 잎, 꽃봉오리, 수염뿌리가 서로 뒤엉킨 그들만의 밀림 지대를 관찰할 기회를 보여준다. 이 작품은 자연의 보전에 대한 상징적인 작업이며, 우리에게 인간의 개입 없이 왕성하게 자라나는 야생식물들의 생명력을 상기시킨다.

이번 전시에는 또한 색상이 입혀진 식물들이 전시장 안에 배치된다. 그는 종종 식물 전체를, 흙에서 추출한 피그먼트로 초록 줄기와 잎을 채색하는데, 식물은 시간이 지나면서 이 물감층을 탈피하며 자라난다. <Green Peace>에서 작가는 붓을 사용하여 색을 칠하나 얇고 가벼운 붓칠은 어느 정도 식물 본연의 모습을 그대로 투영한다.

전시명 <Green Peace>는 환경 운동을 추진하는 활동의 기반적 이념을 다시 한번 생각하게 해준다. 작가는 식물의 성장, 파도의 물결, 달의 주기와 같은 자연의 시간적 과정에 인간의 흔적을 덧붙이며 이 이념을 흡수하며 확장시킨다. 이 흔적들은 자연에 생채기를 내기도, 변화시키기도 하며 자연 친화적인 미래를 유지하기 위해 무엇이 필요한지를 생각하게 하고, 변동하고 예측할 수 없는 자연이 우리에게 무엇을 드러낼 수 있는지 고민하게 한다.

1980년생 앤드류 다드슨은 2003년에 아트 앤 디자인 에밀라카 대학교를 졸업하였으며 현재 밴쿠버에 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 그는 개인전과 단체전을 포함해 다양한 전시 경력을 가졌다. 가장 최근 전시로는 Unit 17, 밴쿠버 (2019), Contemporary Art Gallery, 밴쿠버 (2017), Polygon Gallery, 밴쿠버 (2017), Galleria Franco Noero, 토리노, 이탈리아 (2017) 등이 있으며, Parcours, Art Basel (2016)과 Unlimited, Art Basel (2014)에도 참여하였다. 작가는 2019년에 캐나다 토론토에서 개인전을 앞두고 있으며, 이탈리아 토스카나에서 개최하는 The Artisti per Frescobaldi Art Prize의 2020년 최종 수상 후보로 확정되었다.
