Daniel Buren
Installation at Dong-A Media Centre, Seoul

Daniel Buren, one of the greatest living artist of France, presents his new site-specific work <The Colors of the Morning Calm, work in situ (Les Couleurs au Matin Calme, travail in situ)>, on display at the Dong-A Media Centre in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. Celebrating the upcoming centennial anniversary of Dong-A Ilbo, the installment was launched in collaboration with 313 Art Project.
Through the installment, Buren intended to configure the abstract qualities of Dong-A Media Centre, which interfere with the surrounding environment in both material and conceptual aspect. The eight colors that composed the work symbolize the various views converging in Dong-A Ilbo, one of the most representative daily newspapers of Korea. Colored films attached on the windows shine in subtly changing tones following the time of the day, the weather and sunlight. The work will be exhibited through December 30, 2020, spreading bright and vivid energy across the central Seoul.
Daniel Buren has installed in-situ artworks at monumental architectures and public spaces around the globe. Buren has held solo exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2002 and a retrospective at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2005. He has also participated multiple times in Kassel Documenta and the Venice Biennales, where he was awarded with the Golden Lion Award in 1986 for his exhibition at the French pavilion. His latest exhibitions include ‹Monumenta› at the Grand Palais, Paris (2012), ‹Like Child’s Play, Works On-Site› at the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2014), and <The Observatory of Light> at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2016). In particular, his large scale public artwork ‹Les Deux Plateaux› at Palais Royal, Paris is regarded as the quintessence of his artistic profundity. Buren was introduced to the Korean public through the opening exhibition of Atelier Hermès in 2006, and he has participated in ‹The Poetics of Space› at the Whanki Museum the same year. In 2015, the artist held his first gallery solo exhibition in Korea titled <Variations, Situated and In Situ Works> at 313 ART PROJECT, Seoul and has an upcoming exhibition scheduled to open in the spring of 2020.
프랑스의 대표적인 설치 미술가이자 현대 미술의 거장인 다니엘 뷔렌은 서울 광화문 동아미디어센터에 장소특정적 작업 <한국의 색, 인 시튀 작업 (Les Couleurs au Matin Calme, travail in situ)>를 설치하였다. 이 작품은 2020년 동아일보의 창간 100주년을 앞두고 기획되어, 313아트프로젝트와의 협업으로 진행되었다.
작가는 동아미디어센터와 그 주변 공간에서 받은 영감을 바탕으로 건축물이 가지고 있는 물리적, 관계적 요소를 형상화하고자 하였다. 작품은 8가지 색으로 이루어져 동아일보를 향해 다양한 목소리를 내는 독자와 시청자를 표현한다. 다채로운 컬러 필름은 날씨나 조명도에 따라 미묘하게 다른 시각 효과를 발휘한다. <한국의 색>은 2020년 12월 30일까지 전시되며 고층 빌딩으로 가득한 서울 도심에 밝게 생동하는 에너지를 불어넣을 것이다.
다니엘 뷔렌은 현대인의 생활과 맞닿아 있는 건축물, 그리고 공공 장소를 자신만의 미술로 해석하며 세계 각지에서 인 시튀 작품을 전시해왔다. 2002년 파리 퐁피두 센터, 2005년에는 뉴욕의 구겐하임 미술관에서 기념비적인 회고전을 가졌다. 10여 차례 이상 베니스 비엔날레와 카셀 도큐멘타에 참가하였으며, 특히 1986년에는 베니스 비엔날레 프랑스관 전시로 비엔날레 최고 영예인 황금사자상을 수상하기도 하였다. 그 외, 2012년 파리 그랑팔레 <모뉴멘타 (Monumenta)>, 2014년 프랑스 스트라스부르 현대미술관의 <Like Child’s Play, Works On-site>, 그리고 2016년 파리 Fondation Louis Vuitton의 <The Observatory of Light> 전시 등이 있으며, 프랑스 파리 팔레 루아얄에 설치된 그의 대규모 공공 미술 작품 <두 개의 고원 (Les Deux Plateaux)>은 그의 예술적 깊이를 보여주는 진수로 평가 받는다. 국내에는 2006년 아뜰리에 에르메스 개관전, 환기미술관의 <공간의 시학> 전시로 소개되었으며, 313아트프로젝트에서 2015년 첫번째 개인전 <Variations, Situated and In Situ works>에 이어 2020년 봄 두번째 개인전이 예정되어 있다.
