313 Art Project presents the works of Gigisue, Je Yeoran, Lee Wan, and Kiwon Park in Art Dusseldorf 2017. In its inaugural year, Art Dusseldorf is conducted by the MCH group which also oversees Art Basel. Located at the center of the German art market, Art Dusseldorf aims to showcase a regional art fair that at once focuses on its locationality and presents galleries all across the globe.
Composed of paintings created by four artists with their unique themes and methods, the booth exhibition conveys diverse vivacity of Korean paintings. Gigisue’s series Pater Noster reinterprets traditional Korean landscape painting through her artistic lens. Je Yeoran presents her abstract series Usquam Nusquam composed of curves formed by momentous movement of squeegee, unconventional material, and vibrant color. Lee Wan exhibits his quintessential series Diligent Attitude Towards a Meaningless Thing, which he has shown in Venice Biennale before, discusses the inescapability of social structure that imposes deindividualized standards and roles. Kiwon Park uses a minimalist approach of his spatial understanding in his series Width.
313 Art Project holds solo exhibition Gigisue in January as a part of its <Seongbuk-dong Project>. In the following year, 313 plans to diversify its exhibitions in the enlarged gallery space by holding both solo exhibitions of the 313 Art Gallery artists and long-term projects. In addition, the gallery will introduce established international artists who are relatively still unknown in Korea and spotlight prolific middle-aged Korean artists. It also strives to offer a new possibility of art curation and criticism through its <Alternative Space Project>, which aims to provide not just on-site experiences but also a chance to meet a broad range of audiences to young artists and curators who will lead the Korean contemporary arts in the future.
313아트프로젝트는 아트 뒤셀도르프에 참가하여 지지수, 제여란, 이완, 박기원의 작업을 소개한다. 올해 첫 개막을 맞는 아트 뒤셀도르프는 아트 바젤 등을 주관하는MCH그룹의 참여로 진행되며, 독일 미술 시장의 주요 거점이라는 지역적 특성에 집중하는 동시에 다양한 국적의 갤러리를 수용하며 차별화된 지역 아트페어의 면모를 선보인다.
부스 전시는 네 작가가 독자적인 주제와 방식으로 작업한 회화로 구성되어, 다채롭게 생동하는 한국 회화의 모습을 전달한다. 지지수의 회화 시리즈 <주기도문>은 한국 전통 미술의 산수화를 독특한 시각적 언어를 사용하여 재해석한다.제여란은 스퀴지의 순간적인 운동으로 만들어지는 곡선과 독특한 마띠에르, 그리고 강렬한 색채로 구성되는 추상 회화 작업 <Usquam Nusquam>을 보인다. 이완은 베니스 비엔날레에서 선보인 바 있는 회화 작업 <무의미한 것에 대한 성실한 태도>를 통해 개인에게 일관된 기준과 역할을 강요하는 사회 구조의 불가항력을 전달하며, 박기원은 공간에 대한 이해를 미니멀한 작업 방식으로 재해석한 <넓이> 시리즈를 전시한다.
313은 성북동 프로젝트의 전시로 1월에 지지수 개인전을 진행한다. 이어 내년에는 확장된 공간에서 갤러리 전속 작가의 개인전과 프로젝트성 전시를 병행하여 진행하며 다양해진 전시 기획을 선보이고자 한다. 특히 국제 미술계에서 저명하나 국내에는 비교적 알려지지 않은 외국 작가, 그리고 국내에서 높은 역량으로 주목받는 중견 작가를 개인전으로 소개할 예정이다. 동시에 ‘대안 공간 프로젝트’를 진행하여 한국 현대 미술계에 동력을 부여할 젊은 기획자들에게 현장 전시 경험의 기회를 제공하고 미술 기획 및 비평의 새로운 가능성 또한 모색하고자 한다.
