“I use the certain circumstance of facing an image as a subject of the painting. The situation is derived not just from personal values but also from objective perspectives. I do not intend to record it but to reinterpret in my own eyes.”

Seungchan Lee is an emerging Korean artist who refers to digital printing to convey modern visual culture only interested in consuming images. He merges traditional painting with modern printing techniques, and by doing so he condenses complex conditions individuals face as an image consumer in the midst of the flooding media.
Lee searches for images online and selects the ones he prefers to present. He overprints them or paints over the printed images. He repeats such process over ten times until he satisfies with the finalized work. The piling procedure fades each image from its visual reference as well as from its relation to other images applied on the work. The specific figures ultimately transform into a dark abstract image void of any meaning. The dark surface is also understood as a reproduction of emptiness, or desolate emotion, rising from endless consumption of images. It represents individuals who ceaselessly move from one image to another, and by assembling a cluster of images in his works, Lee encourages introspection in ways of seeing.
Seungchan Lee graduated College of Fine Arts in Hongik University, Seoul and Department of Fine Arts in Seoul National Univeristy of Science and Technology, Seoul. He had solo exhibitions including Art Space Shift (2020), <Double and Half> at 313 Art Project, Seoul (2017), <Second Point> at Space 413, Seoul (2016) and <#000000> at Space Dimension Variable, Seoul (2015).
“나는 이미지를 재료로 삼아 이미지를 보는 상황을 회화로 제작한다. 그 상황은 개인적인 층위에서 비롯한 것일 수도 있으나, 다른 층위 또한 포함한다. 나의 작업은 이들에 대한 구체적인 진술이라기보다는 은유에 가깝다.”

이승찬은 이미지 소비에 집중된 현대 사회의 시각 문화를 디지털 프린팅 기법으로 표현하는 한국의 신진 작가다. 그는 매 순간 이미지가 범람하는 오늘날 사람들이 ‘이미지 소비자’로서 겪는 상황을 이미지로 연출하기 위해 전통적인 회화 작업 방식에 디지털 프린팅 기술을 접목하여 작업한다.
회화의 소재로는 웹 검색 도구를 이용해 모은 이미지들이 사용된다. 작가는 여러 이미지를 한 화면 위에 겹쳐서 출력하거나, 출력된 이미지 위에 페인팅으로 그리거나 지우는 작업을 여러 차례 반복하여 작품을 완성한다. 중첩의 과정에서 이미지 간의 관계와 각각의 의미는 사라지며, 구체적인 이미지에서 시작한 화면은 검은 추상의 화면으로만 남게 된다. 이 ‘검은 화면’은 모든 의미가 사라진 표면인 동시에 매일 수많은 이미지를 마주하며 겪게 되는 이미지 소비자의 공허함, 또는 막막한 감정을 시각적으로 재현한다. 작가는 한 이미지에서 다른 이미지로 끊임없이 이어지는 과정을 한 화면에 옮겨 그리며 회화 작업이 보는 방법에 대한 성찰로 이어지기를 바란다.
이승찬은 홍익대학교 미술대학과 서울과학기술대학교 조형예술과를 졸업하였으며, 아트 스페이스 쉬프트 (2020), 313 아트프로젝트 (2017), 공간 사일삼 (2016), 가변크기 (2015) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였다.
