The Delight of Painting

Ena Swansea (b. 1966) will be holding her first exhibition in Asia at 313 ART PROJECT with the exhibition Ena Swansea: The Delight of Painting. Ena Swansea notes on the importance of painting, especially the figurative paintings. Several works of Swansea were included in Greater New York 2005, an exhibition at PS1 MoMA which selectively presented promising young artists working in New York City. In the following year 2006, she participated in an eminent exhibition The Triumph of Painting, part 3 held at Saatchi Gallery of London, from which she was introduced into the art scenes of New York and Europe, starting to be recognized as a prominent painter of our times.
This exhibition presents 15 oil paints recently done by Ena Swansea. A number of sea landscapes and paintings of haystacks are included, while some others include sceneries of people such as the thanksgiving parade in New York. The element that bring together all of the paintings is the distinctive expression of sunlight that changes its colors when in contact with objects or people. Swansea takes motives of conventional paintings such as sea or haystacks, or everyday sceneries of NYC as the themes for her painting, yet paints them in a very modern, unique manner. The artist has exquisite skill in painting the sunset glaring on the sea, or the moonlight shining over the haystack. The haystacks that Monet often used to paint appears in Swansea’s paintings but in a completely new form, seeming almost like an abstract painting.
The world-renowned artist Luc Tuymans mentioned that Ena Swansea’s paintings seem as if Durer’s drawings corroded through time. Paintings of Swansea exhibit a character distinctive from oil paintings of other artists, due to her use of graphite on canvas before applying oil paint. Graphite has a dual nature, of absorbing and reflecting light at the same time. Swansea makes clever use of such nature to present an original oil painting.
Ena Swansea held solo exhibitions at numerous art institutions including Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg (2012); ARNDT Berlin/New York (2011); NY Armory Show (2006, 2010); and Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg (2008). He group exhibitions include FLAG Foundation, NY (2011); Paul Kasmin Gallery, NY (2009); Kunsthalle Vienna (2008); and Villa Struck, Munich (2008). Her works are collected by prominent art institutions such as MoMA, New York; Olbricht Collection, Berlin; and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden.
313아트프로젝트는 뉴욕에서 활동하는 화가 에나 스완시(Ena Swansea, 1966~)의 아시아 지역 첫 개인전 ‘Ena Swansea: The Delight of Painting’을 연다. 전시제목에서 알 수있듯, 에나 스완시는 회화, 특히 구상화의 중요성을 보여주는 작가다. 에나 스완시는 2005년 뉴욕 PS1 MoMA에서 뉴욕지역 유망한 젊은작가를 선발하는 전시로 했던 ‘Greater New York 2005’에 포함되고 이듬해인 2006년에는 런던의 사치 갤러리에서 했던 역사적인 전시 ‘회화의 승리(The Triumph of Painting, part 3)’에 전시되면서 이 시대의 유망한 회화 작가로 떠올랐고, 이후 뉴욕과 유럽에서 활발하게 소개되어 왔다.
이번 전시에서는 에나 스완시의 최근 유화 작품 15점을 선보인다. 바다풍경과 건초더미 풍경화가 많고, 뉴욕의 추수감사절 퍼레이드 장면 등 사람이 들어간 회화도 있다. 모든 회화에서 공통적으로 보이는 것은 자연광이 풍경과 인물에 닿아 변하는 색깔을 독특하게 표현한 것이다. 스완시는 바다풍경이나 건초더미같은 전통적인 회화의 소재나 뉴욕 시내에서 볼 수 있는 일상적인 풍경을 택해서 아주 현대적이고 독특한 방법으로 그려낸다. 특히 바다를 비추는 석양, 벌판 위의 건초더미를 비추는 달빛을 표현하는 데에 탁월하다. 모네가 즐겨 그렸던 건초더미가 에나 스완시의 그림 속에서는 추상화에 가까운 새로운 모습으로 다시 태어났다.
세계적 화가 루크 토이먼스(Luc Tuymans)는 에나 스완시의 그림을 가리켜 “마치 뒤러의 드로잉처럼 많은 세월을 거쳐 부식한 듯한 느낌이 있다(Like Durer’s drawings, her works look as if they had corroded through time)”고 했다. 스완시의 회화는 다른 작가들의 유화와 다른 느낌인데, 이는 그녀가 캔버스에 흑연(graphite)을 먼저 바르고 그 위에 유화로 그림을 그리기 때문이다. 흑연은 빛을 흡수하면서 동시에 반사하는 이중적 성격이 있는데 스완시는 이런 흑연의 성질을 잘 다루어서 독특한 유화의 느낌을 낸다.
에나 스완시는 독일 함부르크 Sammlung Falckenberg (2012), 뉴욕과 베를린에 있는 ARNDT Berlin/New York (2011), 뉴욕 Armory Show (2006,2010), 룩셈부르크의 Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (2008) 등에서 개인전을 했고, 뉴욕 FLAG Foundation (2011), 뉴욕 Paul Kasmin Gallery (2009), 비엔나 Kunsthalle Vienna (2008), 독일 뮌헨 Villa Stuck (2008) 등에서 그룹전을 했다. 그녀의 작품은 뉴욕 모마, 독일 베를린의 Olbricht Collection, 드레스덴의 Staatliche Kunstsammlungen 등 세계적인 미술관에 소장돼 있다.
