Soul and Metal

Giovanni Ozzola is an emerging Italian artist whose works are based on his study of three dimensional space and light, the mental image of which he creates through photography, installation, and video.
In Soul and Metal, the artist contrasts two different nature, SOUL and METAL, and focuses on the invisible energy produced from their relationship. Such contradiction within nature’s order, represented as a dichotomy of abstract and concrete, infinite and finite, warm and cold, ultimately creates harmony and equilibrium. Ozzola, visualizing the universe of diverse narratives surrounding humanity through the subliminal images, features total of 21 artworks including aluminium works with engraved copper, sculptures of collected propellers with etched drawings, as well as myriads of photography capturing the double-sidedness of the status quo.
Through Sunset, Blue and Other Colours (2015, Inkjet on cotton museum paper, 150 x 216 cm) where a single frame displays two spaces with different history, the artist suggests ambivalence in interpreting subjects. According to him, everything has two sides with each property having its independent significance. With the medium of photography, he attempts to express the complete and harmonious stasis embodying both aspects. Another work titled Africa, Moon, Sun (2015, Inkjet on cotton museum paper, 27 x 21 cm), captures the dramatic coexistence of the moon and the sun when the boundary of time is blurred.
His works on a series of aluminum plates and propellers are related to a theme of ‘self-exploration’, which is of the artist’s recent interest. Lines on the aluminum plates, carved as scars, symbolize a journey of human standing against fears and individual existence within the monumental flow of history. In comparison with the aluminum works which describe present human identity in relation to the past, propellers focus on a personal viewpoint. Propellers, which signify energy, represent the urge of the artist to endlessly devote himself to discovering the unknown.
Ozzola has held solo exhibition at 313 ART PROJECT, Seoul, 2015. He has also exhibited worldwide, including Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Chelsea Art Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; and numerous major museums and galleries throughout Europe. His presence in the international art scene is continuously expanding as his works are collected by MART (Museo D’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto) in Italy and Guangdong Museum of Art in China.
이탈리아 미술계가 주목하는 젊은 작가 지오바니 오졸라는 삼차원의 공간과 빛에 대한 연구를 기반으로 대상이 가지는 본질과 이것이 형성하는 내적 이미지(心像)를 사진과 설치 그리고 비디오를 통해 표현한다.
‹Soul and Metal› 전에서 작가는 상이한 성질을 가진 정신(Soul)과 금속(Metal)을 대비시키고, 이들의 관계가형성하는 비가시적 에너지의 존재에 주목한다. 이들은 각각 비물질과 물질, 무한함과 유한함, 온화함과 차가움을 상징하며 서로 다른 영역에서 대조를 이루는데, 자연 질서에 있어 이러한 상충 관계는 또 다른 의미의 조화와 균형을 나타낸다. 전시에서 작가는 사진을 포함하여, 알루미늄 양각 연작과 오랜 기간 수집한 프로펠러 위에 드로잉을 한 조각작품 등을 선보인다.
전쟁 벙커와 바다라는, 시간에 대한 서로 다른 역사를 공유하는 두 개의 공간을 하나의 화면 위에 담아낸 사진 작품, ‹Sunset, Blue and Other Colours› (2015, Inkjet on cotton museum paper, 150 x 216cm)에서 작가는 사물을 이해하는 양가적인 해석 방식에 관해 이야기한다. 작가에 따르면 모든 사물, 또는 현상에는 양면성이 있으며, 각각의 면은 그 자체로서 하나의 독립적인 의미를 가진다. 그는 사진이라는 매체를 통해 대상이 지니는 양면(兩面)을 모두 함축하는, 완전하고도 조화로운 상태를 표현하고자 하는데, 시간과 경계가 모호해진 순간에 등장하는 해 와 달의 가장 극적인 모습을 포착한 또 다른 사진 작품, ‹Africa, Moon, Sun› (2015, Inkjet on cotton museum paper, 27 x 21cm)은 작가의 이러한 작품 세계를 보여주는 대표적인 예이다.
사진 작품과 함께 소개되는 알루미늄 양각 연작과 프로펠러 위에 드로잉을 한 조각 작품 등은 작가가 최근 몰두하는 ‘자기 탐구(Self-exploration)’의 주제와 연관된다. 알루미늄판 위로 상처처럼 새겨진 선들은 두려움에 맞서왔던 탐험가들의 지난 여정을 의미하며, 거대한 흐름 속에 놓인 개인의 존재를 은유적으로 나타낸다. 알루미늄 양각화 작품이 과거와의 연관 선상에서 현 인류의 정체성을 이야기한다면, 프로펠러 조각 작품은 더욱 개인의 관점에서 이러한 문제에 집중한다. 역동적이고 영속적이면서 또한 강력한 에너지를 내포한 프로펠러 조각은 우리가 지녀야 할 제한적인 삶의 태도인 동시에 새로운 것을 찾아 끝없이 정진하고자 하는 작가 개인의 작업적 소신을 대변한다.
우주 속 인간과 인간을 둘러싼 다양한 내러티브를 내면으로부터 발아된 이미지(像, Mental Image)로 재현하는 지오바니 오졸라는 동경 모리 미술관, 뉴욕 첼시 미술관, 런던 테이트 모던 미술관을 포함 주로 유럽 내 유수의 미술관과 갤러리의 전시에 참여하였으며, 상기 미술관을 포함 이탈리아 로베레토 현대미술관, 중국 광동 미술관에 작품이 소장되는 등, 현재 국제적으로 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다.
