November 26 – December 31, 2014

313 ART PROJECT is holding a duo-exhibition of emerging Korean contemporary artist Lee Wan (b. 1979) and an established artist KiWon Park (b. 1964). With the two artists, 313 ART PROJECT is participating in SPHERES 7, a group exhibition of international contemporary art being held currently in France. This duo-exhibition will an extension from SPHERES 7. It will put emphasis on conveying the two artists’ world of oeuvre from diverse perspectives to the Korean audience. It is our belief that Lee Wan and Kiwon Park, who possess unique and clear sense of subject, will illuminate the future of Korean contemporary art. Hence by presenting the two artists onto the international art scene, we intend show the progress of Korean contemporary art on the international stage. This exhibition is crucial in that it is the first show to signify partnership of the two artists with 313 ART PROJECT.

Lee Wan’s artworks are deeply engaged with the present socio-political issues such as post-colonialism. His serious contemplation on the social role of the art suggests a new method in comprehending visual arts. The display includes two objects-based installation artworks titled, If Given a Chance, I Do Refuse It (Mixed media installation, 2012), and The Possibility of Impossible Things (Mixed media installation, 2012). If Given a Chance, I Do Refuse is composed of a series of objects that the artist himself collected from various places in Seoul and video clips documenting their actual sites. Each abandoned item no longer carries its original value, yet it is restructured by the artist while implying the narrative of the past in the premise of the present. Possibility of Impossible Things questions the uniformity that the standardized society reinforces. The immense scale in balance embodies the binary social structure. It symbolizes the absurd and unreliable contemporary society with its datum point veiled with a cloth piece. Lee Wan was awarded the 1st Art Spectrum 2014 organized by Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, the most prestigious private art museum in Korea and participated in Gwangju Biennale 2014. The two artworks showcased in this exhibition at 313 ART PROJECT were also shown at Gwangju Biennale. Lee Wan is expecting to hold his solo exhibition at 313 ART PROJECT in 2015.

Through installation works focusing on property of material, Kiwon Park emphasizes the triangular relationship among space, artworks and spectators. His adaptation of ordinary object directly on to the distinctiveness of space allows the spatiality itself to become the object or the theme. 313 ART PROJECT will be showing two genres of his work including 6 of the painting series entitled, Width (Oil on Korean traditional paper, 214×150 cm, 2007~2008) and a large scaled installation work, Garden (Stainless steel wire, cloth balls, dimension variable, 2014). Both works reveal the artist’s continued reflection on space. Width is a series of oil paintings depicted on several layers of Korean traditional paper. It shows the way Park defines spatiality on a sheet of paper perceived as a single space. He brings the plane into three segments, the minimum unit for space development, and fills up each sections by painting many lines in reiteration. The installation work, Garden disintegrates a fixed idea of the pure property of material throughout the process of untangling and interweaving the wire, simultaneously visualizing an artificial Korean garden which provides the idea of harmony. The use of five colored cloth balls symbolize Korean traditional method of perceiving areas. Its concept of Korean garden reflects the artist’s intention to encompass all aspects of space, artworks and audiences. A similar work Flash Wall (Stainless steel, cloth ball, dimension variable) is currently installed outside the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. The artist’s focusing on an object’s innate property not only reflects the western minimalism of the sixties but also the aesthetics of Korean meditation. Kiwon Park was selected as the Artist of the Year 2010 by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and represented the Korean Pavilion in the 51st Venice Biennale. Kiwon Park will also hold his solo exhibition at 313 ART PROJECT.

(If Given a Chance, I Do Refuse It, 2012, Mixed media installation)›와 ‹불가능한 것들의 가능성 (The Possibility of Impossible Things, 2012, Mixed media installation)›,
