Reflection-色卽是空

Seonghi Bahk focuses on human perception that creates a drastically different outcome depending on the way one takes in his or her surrounding environment. Adopting the relationship between an object’s existence and its essence as the principal motif in his oeuvre, the artist combines small pieces of charcoal, acrylic and crystal beads to compose his structure. By hanging his works in the air, Bahk achieves a balance among the works, space, and the audience.
Through Reflection – 色卽是空, the artist discusses the essence of an object that exists within its shape and image. Although thought is non-visible, its essence is boundless and never stagnant. The exhibition follows the established structure of his oeuvres, yet the works reflect the artist’s understanding of the exhibition space and new materials.
An Aggregation – Reflection 20160301, which is displayed on the façade of the building, is composed of myriad of colored mirror splinters. Reminiscent of the Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto’s performance of shattering colossal mirrors, Bahk deviates from a typical approach to making art by shattering mirrors and composing his work with irregular shards. The artist uses elements that are non-visible yet fill the space in which we occupy such as air, wind, and sunlight that filters through the glass and encounters a glass — through a harmonious composition of these elements, Bahk creates a festival of brilliant colors and lights.
The artist recreates a forest with charcoal, a material he has been using for a long time. Charcoal is the purest element that encompasses nature’s cycle of creation and destruction — the artist uses such symbolism and beauty of its form as his principal material. The myriad of pieces of charcoal hung on the ceiling together creates a forest, in the middle of which is a path where the audience can walk through. Rather than having the audience passively see the artwork, Bahk wants them to engage multiple senses in appreciating his work.
An Aggregation – Light 20160303 is installed on the stairway connecting the first and second floors using optical fiber, which transits light through mirrors with different refractive indexes. On the second floor, the artist’s sculptural and two dimensional works will be introduced, including wall-mounted sculptures that look different depending on the angle from which they are viewed. These works break preconceived notions on perspectives and objects.
Seonghi Bahk studied Sculpture in Chung-Ang University then went on the study at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. He was active in London, UK, and Mannheim, Germany for eleven years and is now continuing his works in Korea. Notable public collections include Louis Vuitton Foundation, France; PKB Private Bank, Switzerland; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Samsung Design Library, Korea; and Hotel Shilla, Seoul.
박선기 작가는 주변환경과 보는 방식에 따라 전혀 다른 결과를 도출해내는 인간의 지각 능력에 주목하여, 존재와 이것의 근원이 되는 본질의 관계를 작품의 주요 주제로 삼는다. 재료 고유의 특성을 작품 완성의 초석으로 여기는 작가는 숯과 아크릴 그리고 크리스탈 비즈 등의 작은 조각들을 조합하여 구성체를 만들고, 이를 공중에 매닮으로써 작품과 공간 그리고 관람자 사이의 완전한 균형을 의도한다.
‹Reflection – 色卽是空› 전에서 작가는 형태(Shape)와 상(Image)에 내재한 존재의 본질에 대해 이야기한다. 외형을 빌어 비로소 인식되는 인간 사유는 비가시적이나, 전시장 전체를 온전히 채우는 것으로, 그 본성은 무한하나 또한 어느 한 곳에 천착하지 않는다. 전시는 작가의 작품 세계와 기존의 작품 구성 방식을 따르되, 전시 공간에 대한 이해와 새로운 소재에 대한 작가의 고심이 반영된 작품들로 구성된다.
전면에 설치되는 작품은 뒷면이 채색된 무수히 많은 거울 조각으로 이루어져 있다. 이탈리아 작가 미켈란젤로 피스톨레토가 거대한 거울을 깨뜨리는 퍼포먼스를 통해 작업을 하듯, 작가는 기존의 정형화된 작업 방식에서 벗어나, 거울을 깨뜨리고, 이것의 불규칙적이면서도 정제되지 않은 파편들로 작품을 만든다. 작가는 눈에 보이지는 않으나, 실제로는 공간을 가득 채우는 공기와 바람, 그리고 유리창을 통과해 거울과 마주하는 태양광 등의 주변 요소들에 관심을 가지며, 이러한 요소들의 균형적인 조합을 통해 공간 내 찬란한 빛과 색의 향연을 선사한다.
1층 내부는 작가의 오랜 작품 재료인 숯을 위한 공간으로, 작가는 숯으로 이것의 근원인 나무 숲을 재현한다. 숯은 생성과 소멸이라는 자연의 이치를 함축한 가장 순수한 형태의 실재로, 작가는 재료가 가진 이러한 상징성과 형태미를 작품 완성의 주요 기제로 삼는다. 천장 빼곡히 매달린 숯은 하나 둘씩 모여 우거진 숲을 이루고, 숲의 중간에는 관객들이 지나다닐 수 있는 길이 열려있다. 작가는 관객이 하나의 감각에 수동적으로 의존하기 보다, 다양한 감각을 복합적으로 이용해 작품을 감상할 수 있도록 한다.
1층에서 2층으로 연결되는 계단에는 굴절률이 서로 다른 유리를 사용해 빛의 전반사를 유도하는 특징을 가진 광섬유를 이용한 작품, ‹An Aggregation – Light 20160303›이 설치된다. 또한 2층은 작가의 전반적인 작업 세계를 엿볼 수 있는 다양한 조각, 평면 작업들이 소개되는데, 시선에 따라 다른 형태로 인지되며, 사물에 대한 고정 관념을 깨뜨리는 입체 평면 연작을 포함 아크릴을 이용한 다양한 작품 등이 보여진다.
박선기는 중앙대학교 조소과를 졸업하였으며, 이탈리아 밀라노에 위치한 브레라 예술대학(Brera Academy of Fine Arts)에서 수학하였다. 이탈리아 유학 기간을 포함 영국 런던, 독일 만하임 등에서 11년 동안 활동하였으며, 이후 귀국하여 현재는 국내에서 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다. 최근 전시로는 프랑스 파리 인근에서 열린 313 ART PROJECT의 해외 협업 프로젝트 ‹SPHERES›전이 있으며, 2015년에는 우양미술관 개인전 ‹뷰티풀(View-tiful)› 전을 포함 패션 브랜드 크리스챤 디올과의 콜라보레이션 전시인 ‹디올 정신(Esprit Dior)›, 현대자동차 프로젝트 ‹브릴리언트 메모리즈› 등에 참여하였다. 전 세계 주요 컬렉션과 미술관 및 공공 장소 등에 작품이 설치, 소장되었으며, 프랑스 루이비통 파운데이션, 스위스 PKB Private 은행을 포함하여 국내는 국립현대미술관, 아모레퍼시픽 미술관, 삼성전자 디자인 라이브러리, 서울 신라호텔 등이 있다.
