313 ART PROJECT is proud to announce the opening of the solo exhibition of internationally renowned video artist, Tony Oursler. American multimedia and video artist Tony Oursler (b. 1957) is known for his innovative combinations of media, science, technology, and performance in order to investigate the relationship between the individual and mass media system, which he has intensely worked with since the 1970s. As an artist influenced by Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler has been discussed often as a major figure amongst the second generation of video artists.
Throughout the years, influenced by the innovative technological advance of mass media’s impact on the public, Ourlser has concentrated to illustrate such relationship. His works at times mimic the way mass media communicates with the public, and metaphorically depicts the pertinence between men and mass media while dealing with the theme of the advancement of media technology.
Appreciating Oursler’s works is a very interesting and joyful experience. Nonetheless, through humor and joy in the work, Ourlser displays humankind’s obsessive relationship with computers and other virtual platforms. His works depict traits such as obsession, escapism, loneliness, and fetishes that people do not want to admit to having. Drawing has been an essential part of Ourlser’s creative process which he combines with his video installations. Although his works involves mechanics, the works are poetic and lyrical.
Tony Oursler is primarily known for his original and innovative combinations of video, sculpture and performance. Oursler’s work explores the complexities of everyday social interactions in the words and actions of ephemeral characters, their presence made possible by current communications technology, such as the Internet and telephonics. This is the first exhibition in which Ourlser has participated in Korea. 313 ART PROJECT reveals a cross-section of Oursler’s works; it is presenting a diverse overview of new works including 1 large scale installation work, 4 micro works, and a suite of paintings with moving images. In a special window installation, designed for 313 ART PROJECT, Oursler presents three of his iconic and colorful Splatter paintings.
In a new mixture of formal approaches, Oursler plays with scale, form, language, sound, materials, space, motion and light. He invites the viewer to participate in the inner dynamics of the characters locked within his multimedia installations. These works combine technological presentations, either projections or flat screens, of Oursler’s characters, animations, performances and texts within a richly detailed sculptural and painted space. The artist uses elaborate editing structures which form interlocking internal relationships within his work.
Tony Oursler graduated from California Institute of the Art in 1979 and is currently based in New York. Oursler’s works have been exhibited internationally including solo exhibitions in Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Denmark (2012); Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan (2011); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2010); Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2009); Musee D’Orsay, Paris (2004); Kunsthaus, Aarhus, Denmark (2004) and many more. His group exhibitions include The Museum of Art and Design, New York (2012); Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati (2011); Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2010); The Whitney Museum of Art, New York (2010); and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York (2008). His works are collected in various places including Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Cartier Foundation in Paris, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Musee d’Art Contemporain in Barcelona and many more.

313아트프로젝트는 세계적 비디오 작가 토니 아워슬러(Tony Oursler, 1957~)의 한국 첫 개인전을 연다. 토니 아워슬러는 백남준 이후의 새로운 비디오 작가 세대를 논할 때 빠지지 않고 등장하는 세계적 대가다. 그는 비디오와 영상에 과학기술과 퍼포먼스를 넣어 자기만의 독특한 작품세계를 만들었다. 비디오와 과학기술과 퍼포먼스 등 1970년대 이후 서양 현대미술에 새로운 문을 열어준 모든 요소에 영향을 받았기에 이 시대성을 잘 보여주면서, 그 영향을 자기만의 세계로 완전히 내화한 작가로서 세계 주요 미술관과 평단에서 호평을 받고 있다.
토니 아워슬러는 특히 과학기술에 의해 발달한 ‘매스미디어’가 사람들에게 끼치는 영향에 관심을 가지고 사람들과 매스미디어의 관계를 보여주는 작품에 집중했다. 그의 작품은 때로는 매스미디어가 사람들과 소통하는 방법을 따라 하기도 하고, 미디어 기술의 발전을 소재로 다루기도 하면서, 우리 현대인이 매스미디어와 어떤 관계에 있는지를 은유적으로 보여준다.
아워슬러의 작품을 보면 마치 게임을 보듯이 재미있다. 하지만 그런 유머와 즐거움이 들어 있는 작품을 통해 작가는 현대인이 컴퓨터 등 시각적인 기술에 얼마나 사로잡혀있는지를 보여준다. 그의 작품이 주는 시각적 재미에 빠져 있다 보면, 기계의 노예가 되어버린 우리 현대인의 자화상을 보는듯 하다. 강박관념, 도피주의, 외로움, 성적인 집착 등 현대인들이 인정하고 싶지 않지만, 저도 모르게 가지고 있는 병적인 요소를 그는 작품을 통해 드러내 보인다. 또 토니 아워슬러는 비디오 작가로는 특이하게 종이와 비디오를 결합한 조각도 만들고 드로잉을 많이 하는 작가다. 그래서 그의 작품은 기계가 들어가 있어도 시적이고 서정적이다.
313아트프로젝트의 이번 전시는 토니 아워슬러의 첫 한국 전시인 만큼, 그의 작품세계 전체를 보여준다. 갤러리 한가운데를 꽉 채울 큰 설치작품 1점, 인간 내면의 복잡한 심사를 시적으로 표현한 작은 비디오 작품 4점, 그리고 회화 속에 영상을 넣은 작품 등 모두 12점을 선보인다. 작가는 한국에서 하는 첫 전시를 위해 거의 모두 새 작품으로 준비했다. 313아트프로젝트의 입구에는 널찍한 윈도 갤러리가 있는 것이 특징인데, 이 윈도 공간을 위해 작가는 특별히 그의 스플래터 회화(Splatter Painting) 3점을 선보인다. 평면작품 속에 작은 비디오가 숨어 있어서, 마치 그림 속 다른 세상을 엿보는 느낌을 주는 재미있는 작품이다.
토니 아워슬러는 1979년에 미국 캘리포니아 아트 인스티튜트(California Institute of Art)를 졸업했고 현재 뉴욕에서 작업하고 있다. 덴마크 오르후스 쿤스트 뮤지엄(Aarhus Kunstmuseum, 2012), 밀라노 현대미술관(Padiglione d’Arte Contemporarnea, 2011), 뉴욕 휘트니 미술관 (2010), 오스트리아 브레겐츠 쿤스트하우스(Kunsthaus Bregenz, 2009), 파리 오르세 미술관(2004), 뉴욕의 메이저 갤러리인 메트로픽처스(Metro Pictures)와 레만 머핀(Lehmann Maupin) 갤러리 등에서 개인전을 했고, 뉴욕 디자인 미술관(2012), 신시내티 미술관(2011), 피츠버그 카네기미술관(2010), 뉴욕 근현대미술관 모마(MoMA, 2008) 등에서 그룹전을 했다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕의 모마와 휘트니미술관, 파리의 퐁피두 미술관과 카르티에 재단, 헬싱키 현대미술관, 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 SFMoMA, 바르셀로나 현대미술관 등 세계적인 미술관들에 소장되어 있다.
