Double and Half

As the second part of Seongbuk-dong Project, Seungchan Lee is holding his solo exhibition, Double and Half.
Seung Chan Lee is an emerging Korean artists uses digital printing method to portray the contemporary visual culture that almost exclusively focuses on image consumption. As “image consumers”, people are overwhelmed by the abundance of images at every moment of their day. In order to depict this situation as an image, the artist overlays digital printing technique on top of traditional painting.
The main theme of Lee’s solo exhibition is “dark painting”, for which he is most known. The artist repeats the process of printing various images on a single screen. In this overlay the significance of each image and the relation among the images disappear, leaving only an abstract black screen–the surface devoid of meanings visualize image consumers’ emptiness and exhaustion as they are continuously confronted with images. By translating on to the canvas the process by which one image continues on to the next, Lee offers an alternative way of looking at and thinking about paintings.
The artist’s former series deal with “the death of an image” as the superimposed images within the square canvas create the shape of a cross, whereas the new works that are 2m x 1m become increasingly darker as they approach the center, indicating the existence of the vanishing point that cannot be seen. Through this vanishing point, Lee argues for stepping out of the role of a passive image consumer.
Having studied fine arts in Hongik University and Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Seungchan Lee had solo exhibitions Space 413: Second Point in 2016 and Variable Size: #000000 in 2015.
313 아트프로젝트는 한국의 신진 작가를 소개하는 성북동 프로젝트의 두 번째 전시로 이승찬 작가의 개인전 ‹Double and Half›를 연다.
이승찬은 이미지 소비에 집중된 현대 사회의 시각 문화를 디지털 프린팅 기법으로 표현하는 한국의 신진 작가다. 그는 매순간 이미지가 범람하는 오늘날 사람들이 ‘이미지 소비자’로서 겪는 상황을 하나의 이미지로 연출하기 위해 전통적인 회화 작업 방식에 디지털 프린팅 기술을 접목시켜 작업한다.
이번 전시의 주된 테마는 작가의 대표적인 ‘검은 회화’ 작업이다. 이 작업은 여러 이미지를 한 화면 위에 겹쳐서 출력하는 과정을 여러 차례 반복하여 완성된다. 중첩의 과정에서 각 이미지의 의미와 이미지들 간의 관계는 사라지며, 구체적인 이미지에서 시작한 화면은 검은 추상의 화면으로만 남게 된다. 이는 모든 의미가 사라진 표면인 동시에 매일 수많은 이미지를 마주하며 겪게 되는 이미지 소비자의 공허함, 또는 막막한 감정을 시각적으로 재현한다. 작가는 한 이미지에서 다른 이미지로 끊임없이 이어지는 과정을 한 화면에 옮겨 그리며 회화 작업을 보는 방법에 대한 성찰로 이어지기를 바란다.
작가가 기존에 선보여온 시리즈는 정사각형으로 된 기존 작업의 화면 속에 이미지들이 겹쳐져 십자가 형태를 만들어내며 이미지의 죽음을 이야기한다. 반면, 새롭게 작업한 2m x 1m 크기의 작품은 바깥에서 중앙으로 갈수록 어두워지는 화면을 보이며 보이지 않는 소실점의 존재를 내비친다. 수많은 이미지가 중첩되어 만들어지는 화면 속 소실점은 바라보는 시점에 따라 다른 의미로 인식될 수 있다. 작가는 이 소실점을 통해 전시 제목 ‘Double and Half’와 같이 넘치거나 모자란 상태에서 ‘정확한 하나’, 혹은 수동적인 이미지 소비자의 자리를 벗어나 성장한 개인이 되고자 하는 의지에 초점을 맞춘다.
이승찬은 홍익대학교 미술대학과 서울과학기술대학교 조형예술과를 졸업하였다. 그는 2016년 공간 사일삼: Second Point, 2015년 가변크기:#000000 등 개인전을 개최하였다.
