313 Art Project will introduce < 313 Seongbuk-dong – Alternative Space Project > in 2018. The new project aims to provide not only on-site experiences but also chances to meet a broad range of audiences to young artists and curators who will lead the future of the Korean contemporary arts. By offering exhibition spaces and opportunities to undergraduate and graduate student in fine arts as well as young independent artists and curators, 313 ART PROJECT hopes to foster the growth of domestic arts.
The new project is part of 313 ART PROJECT’s continuing efforts to discover hidden talents in through , a year-long program launched in 2017. The gallery offers a new paradigm in art curation, while contributing to the growth of the Korean art community by providing valuable experiences to young artists and curators. Before the official launch of the project in 2018, 313 ART PROJECT will hold a solo exhibition of Sanghoon Lee for three weeks in October 2017.
Sanghoon Lee views the separate elements of a painting as independent “dimensions” and investigates the “system of painting” based on his observations. His elements include optical elements such as light and shadow, formal elements such as colors and contours, and even the structural elements such as the frame and canvas.
His solo exhibition Two Tables investigates the dimensions of colors and contours through a fabricated space, a quarry. The “colors” Lee refers to in the space, which is created through a transcendental understanding of the color system, is a ready-made pigment system dispersed through tube paints. Within the technical data table universally used by color manufacturing industries, the artist interprets the relationships among various paints containing the same pigments as the working process in quarries. On the other hand, the series on contours functions as instruction manuals for quarry workers. Within the two dimensional space, Lee systematically documented the rendering of a three dimensional form.
The landscape of colors and contours spread throughout the TWO TABLES exhibition space is also a view of the supervisor’s worktable. An artist’s physical environment explains the non-visual aspects of his or her works whether directly or indirectly–what does the audience see on the work table of the supervisor who is also a worker, researcher, and planner? It is the audience’s question of the artist’s present and the artist’s answer to the future of painting as a genre.
313은 2018년 새로운 기획으로, ‘313 대안공간 프로젝트’를 예정하고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 한국 현대 미술계에 동력을 부여할 젊은 기획자들이 보다 자유롭게 현장 전시 경험을 쌓고 넓은 층의 관객을 만날 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 한다. 예술 분야에 종사하는 학부 및 대학원생을 비롯해, 독립적으로 큐레이팅, 또는 작품 활동을 하고 있는 학생들을 대상으로 하는 이 프로젝트는 전시공간 제공뿐만 아니라 실질적인 미술 현장 경험과 성장의 발판이 되는 기회를 부여한다.
이는 2017년 1년간 국내 작가를 발굴하고 알리던 ‘성북동 프로젝트’ 전시에서 나아가, 미술 기획 및 비평의 새로운 가능성을 제시하고 한국 미술 문화 발전에 다양한 방식으로 기여하는 계기가 될 것이다. 본격적인 시행 이전, 313은 2017년 10월, 성북동 213번지에서 이상훈 작가의 개인전을 3주간 시범 진행한다.
이상훈은 회화를 구성하는 요소들을 각각의 독립된 ‘차원’으로 고찰하고 이를 토대로 ‘그리기의 체계’를 연구하는 작가이다. 여기서 회화를 구성하는 요소들이란, 빛과 그림자 같은 광학적인 요소나, 색상이나 윤곽과 같은 조형적인 요소들, 혹은 서포트를 구성하는 프레임과 캔버스 천 같은 구조적인 요소들까지도 포괄한다.
이번 개인전 TWO TABLES에서는 ‘채석장’이라는 가상의 공간을 통해 색상과 윤곽의 차원을 탐구한다. 선험적 지식으로서의 색 혼합 체계를 기반으로 설계한 이 공간에서 작가가 다루고자 하는 ‘색상’이란, 튜브물감을 통해 레디메이드적으로 통용되는 안료의 체계이다. 이 전시에서는 물감업계에 통용되는 물감 성분표(technical data table) 중, 동일한 안료를 지닌 다수의 물감들 사이의 관계를 채석장의 작업과정으로 제시한다. 한편 윤곽에 관한 연작은 채석장의 인부들을 위한 일종의 작업지시서이다. 원근법적 질서로부터 유리된 2차원적 공간에서, 특정한 3차원적 형태를 가공하는 과정을 단계적으로 지시하고 기록하기 위해 단면의 양태를 체계화 하였다.
TWO TABLES의 전시 공간에 펼쳐진 색상과 윤곽의 풍경은 채석장을 감독하는 이의 작업대 위 풍경이기도 하다. 많은 경우, 작가들의 물리적 작업환경이 해당 작품의 비가시적 층위들을 직간접적으로 설명해 주는 바, 작업자이자, 연구자이며, 설계자이기도 한 어느 감독관의 작업대를 통해 우리는 무엇을 바라볼 수 있을 것인가? 이것은 작가의 현재에 대한 관객의 질문이자, 회화의 미래에 대한 작가의 답변일 것이다.
