At the end of this 3rd confinement in Paris, we wish to offer a breath of fresh air through the works of multiple artists. The ongoing pandemic has been a source of inspiration for several artists, and it has allowed them to introduce to us works whose meaning resonates with this period of time.
This exhibition brings together Korean and western artists, both established and rising. Depending on the artist’s residence over the past year, constraints related to health regulations had a direct effect on the works produced. As a result, some had to adapt to the situation of being deprived of their studios and set up workshops at home, which in some cases were small apartments. For example, the small format of the works presented by Sid is directly linked to the size of his workspace during his confinement.
During the proposed visit we go with the dark and cold universe of Sid, from the childhood memories of Gigisue to the imaginary characters of Woo Kukwon, from the choreographed gestures of Lee Kun-yong to the geometric designs of Xavier Veilhan. Giovanni Ozzola opens a window to a better horizon, hopefully, while Seung Yonrai imagines herself traveling in the shade of palm trees. The corners of Hong Jungpyo’s works meet the curves of Je Yeoran’s canvases.
Each artist brings us into his particular universe, sometimes very distant from each other, and invites us to be immersed in their work, the message conveyed, reflecting on contemporary society and our human condition.
파리에서의 3번째 봉쇄가 끝나가는 이 시점에서, 우리는 열 명의 아티스트들의 작업을 통해 분위기를 전환해보려고 합니다. 오랫동안 지속되고 있는 이 팬데믹은 많은 작가들에게 영감의 소재가 되기도 했고, 이 시기에 대해 여러 생각들을 하도록 하는 작품들을 소개해주는 계기가 되기도 했습니다.
이번 전시는 한국과 유럽, 이미 알려진 작가와 새로운 작가들을 한데 모았습니다. 지난 일년간 작가가 거주하고 있는 지역에 따라 팬데믹 관련 규율이 달라지며 작품에도 직접적인 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 일부는 스튜디오가 없는 상황에 적응해야했고, 집이 작업실이 되기도 했으며, 어떤 경우에는 작은 아파트가 스튜디오가 되기도 했습니다. 예를 들어, Sid가 보여주는 작은 형태의 작품들은 봉쇄 기간동안 작가가 마주해야했던 제약들을 그대로 반영하고 있습니다.
전시 기간 동안 우리는 Sid의 어둡고 차가운 세계관으로, 지지수의 어린 시절 추억에서부터 우국원의 상상 속 캐릭터들로, 이건용의 신체 드로잉에서 기하학적인 Xavier Veilhan의 디자인으로 자유롭게 이동합니다. 지오바니 오졸라가 더 나은 지평선을 향한 창문을 열어주면, 승연례는 야자 나무 그늘 아래에서 여행하는 자신을 상상합니다. 홍정표의 뾰족한 작품들은 제여란의 캔버스 위 물감들이 만들어낸 곡선과 조화를 이룹니다.
이번 전시를 통해 작가들은 서로 멀리 떨어져있는 각자만의 우주로 우리를 데려가 작품 속에 빠져들도록 하고, 그 안에 있는 메세지를 전달하고, 현대 사회와 인류가 처한 조건들에 대해 되돌아볼 수 있는 장을 마련해줄 것입니다.
