Friedrich Kunath studied at the Braunschweig University of Arts, Braunschweig, Germany, and now lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Kunath utilizes a personal style of romantic conceptualism, layering poetic phrases with poignant, often melancholy imagery. The work embraces comedy and pathos, evoking universal feelings of love, hope, longing, and despair. The artist’s personal journey from Germany to Los Angeles plays a key role in his work, incorporating German Romanticism and western popular culture, with still life, cartoon imagery, commercial illustration, nature photography and lyrical references.
He starts his work by applying oil paint on a large canvas and takes time to add other elements here and there. Small cartoon characters, objects that represent American pop culture, and little animals brighten up the dark backdrop and provide narrative to the image. Short sentences that become the titles of each work are memos or phrases from novels that the artist has collected over time, and are written at the very last stage of his work process. The characters scattered in the landscapes bring out the humor and tragedy found in transitory timelessness.
The artist’s works often refer to the idea of waiting and coming back. It is a mixed feeling of missing something or someone, the pathos derived from the wish to belong somewhere, and also the desire to start anew. This contradictory message completes each surface with the help of the artist’s sense of humor and consolation. In a canvas full of irony and nostalgia, what the artist ultimately pursues is a quest for beauty and purity.
From his precipitous rise in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Friedrich Kunath has been making art that beautifully and lyrically combines the experience of the ordinary with the sublime. Kunath carries on his study of a dichotomous human condition—an exploration in happiness and sadness, romanticism, nostalgia, longing, the fetish of authenticity, and the myth of genius. This exhibition negotiates the facets of personal experience registered on a psycho-emotional pendulum that swings between the search for deep existential meaning and purpose, and a frenetic, nonsensical and humorous nihilism.
He recently had a solo show at Blum & Poe, LA, and is scheduled to have a solo exhibition in Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga, Spain(2023) and Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany(2023). His first solo exhibition in Korea was held at 313 Art Project in 2022. Other representative solo exhibitions include Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, Germany (2016), Modern Art Oxford, Oxford(2013, Sprengel Museum, Hannover(2012), and Hammer Museum, LA(2010). His works are collected in museums and institutions including Carnegie Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, Hammer Museum, MoCA, LA, MoMA, New York, and Pinault Collection.

대형 캔버스에 오일 페인팅을 그림으로써 작업을 시작하는 그는, 시간을 두고 서서히 작품 속에 추가적인 요소들을 더해 나간다. 작은 카툰 캐릭터, 아메리칸 팝을 연상시키는 오브제, 그리고 동물들은 어두운 배경에 경쾌함을 부여하고 이미지에 내러티브를 제공한다. 작품의 제목이 되는 짧은 문장들은 작가가 평소 모아둔 메모나 소설 속 구절들에서 기인하며 작업의 가장 마지막 단계에 추가된다. 그의 풍경 속에 흩어져있는 이러한 속성들은 덧없는 영원함 속 모순된 순간들에서 발견되는 유머와 비극을 끄집어낸다.
Kunath의 작품에 큰 영향을 미친 독일 낭만주의는 기다림, 불안, 무한함 등의 감정에 기반을 둔다. 작가의 작품에는 특히 기다림과 돌아옴에 대한 언급이 자주 등장하는데, 무언가를 그리워하는 마음과 어딘가에 속해 있기를 원하는 수동적인 상태를 시적으로 표현하는 동시에, 새로 시작하고 싶어하는 열망 또한 언뜻 내비친다. 이렇듯 상반된 메시지는 작가의 유머 감각 및 위안과 뒤섞여 캔버스를 완성시킨다. 아이러니와 노스탤지어 가득한 캔버스 속에서 작가가 결국 말하고 싶은 것은 아름다움과 순수에 대한 탐구로 귀결될 수 있다.
1990 년대 후반과 2000 년대 초 급격히 성장하며 Kunath 는 평범한 경험과 숭고함을 아름답고 서정적으로 결합해 예술을 만들어 왔다. Kunath 는 행복과 슬픔, 낭만주의, 향수, 갈망, 진정성에 대한 집착, 천재의 신화 등 이분법적인 인간 상태에 대한 연구를 계속한다. 그의 작품들은 존재론적인 의미를 찾으려는 인간의 진지함과, 열광적이며 무의미하고 때로는 유머러스하기까지 한 인간의 허무주의 사이를 왕복하는 흔적이다.
그는 2023년 Blum & Poe, LA에서 개인전을 가졌고, Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga, Spain과 Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany에서 전시가 예정되어 있다. 2022년 313 아트 프로젝트에서 국내 첫 개인전을 가졌으며, 이외에도 Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, Germany (2016), Modern Art Oxford, Oxford(2013, Sprengel Museum, Hannover(2012), Hammer Museum, LA(2010) 등의 미술관에서 개인전을 가졌다. Carnegie Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, Hammer Museum, MoCA, LA, MoMA, New York, Pinault Collection 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
