In ‘Repair Is the Dream of a Broken Thing,’ Friedrich Kunath examines the relationship between leaving and arriving as depicted in the imagery of the sunrise and sunset. The exhibition explores an exchange between these two polarities, as the points of rising and setting become transfixed forever among Kunath’s various paintings.

The characters scattered throughout these landscapes act out the sensations of both humor and tragedy that one finds in such a paradoxical moment of transitory timelessness. As he paints, Kunath seeks to find consoling moments within these paradoxes. The paintings ask themselves – where is the poetry in a continuous unraveling and repairing? What inner movie unfolds once you surrender yourself to that Sisyphean premise? – Friedrich Kunath

쿠나스의 ‘Repair Is the Dream of a Broken Thing’ 개인전을 통해서 작가는 일출과 일몰의 모습에서 묘사되는 이미지 – 출발과 도착, 떠남과 돌아옴 사이의 관계를 탐구한다. 이렇게 상반된 개념은 쿠나스의 여러 회화작품 속에 영원히 각인되어 둘 사이를 오가는 작가의 고민과 생각들을 고스란히 담았다.

그의 풍경 속에 흩어져있는 캐릭터들은 덧없는 영원함 속 모순된 순간들에서 발견되는 유머와 비극을 연출하는 역할을 한다. 작가는 작업을 하며 이런 모순 속에서 위안을 찾는다. 그리고 그의 작품들은 스스로에게 질문을 던진다. 끊임없이 펼처지고 치유되는 과정 가운데, 우리에게 위안이 되는 시(poetry)는 어디에 있는가? 끝이 없는 시시포스의 전제 속에 자신을 맡겼을 때, 당신의 내면에서는 어떤 영화가 펼쳐지는가…? – 작가의 글 중에서

313 Art Project Cheongdam Space is delighted to present ‘Repair Is the Dream of a Broken Thing, Part 2,’ Friedrich Kunath’s solo exhibition. Born German and currently living and working in LA, Kunath depicts emotions through painting, sculpture, and installations in a delicate way but without being too blue. He is now one of the leading painters that shape contemporary art scene in the US. In this exhibition, the artist explores the relationship between leaving and arriving through images of sunrise and sunset. The two opposing concepts and the artist’s thoughts in between are immortalized in the paintings shown.

The artist overlaps German romanticism over warm, lyrical Californian landscape. And with nonchalant and witty attitude, he describes human emotions where happiness and depression, encounter and parting, assurance and anxiety coexist. This somehow reminds us of the famous quote, ‘Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.’ The artist is not necessarily cynical, however. The floating letters written on peaceful scenery will approach viewers as monologues and offer comfort and sympathy.

He starts his work by applying oil paint on a large canvas and takes time to add other elements here and there. Small cartoon characters, objects that represent American pop culture, and little animals brighten up the dark backdrop and provide narrative to the image. Short sentences that become the titles of each work are memos or phrases from novels that the artist has collected over time, and are written at the very last stage of his work process. The characters scattered in the landscapes bring out the humor and tragedy found in transitory timelessness.

German romanticism that has deeply affected Kunath’s works is based on concepts such as longing, instability, and infinity. The artist’s works often refer to the idea of waiting and coming. It is a mixed feeling of missing something or someone, the pathos derived from the wish to belong somewhere, and also the desire to start anew. This contradictory message completes each surface with the help of the artist’s sense of humor and consolation. In a canvas full of irony and nostalgia, what the artist ultimately pursues is a quest for beauty and purity.

Being a tennis fanatic, Kunath has once said that he feels like a tennis ball flying between two racquets, moving between various conflicting emotions. It is probably thanks to the artist’s wit that even the works dominated by dark colors do not feel too heavy and gloomy. In irony and melancholy, he continues his rally.

작가는 캘리포니아의 따뜻한 자연을 떠올리게 하는 햇살과 나무 등 서정적인 풍경 위에 독일 특유의 진지함과 로맨티시즘을 포갠다. 그리고 행복과 우울, 조우와 이별, 확신과 불안이 공존하는 인간의 감정선을 담담하고 위트 있는 필체로 묘사한다. 이러한 관망적 어투는 마치 인생은 가까이서 보면 비극이지만 멀리서 보면 희극이라는 말을 상기시키기도 한다. 그러나 작가가 냉소적인 태도를 취하는 것은 아니다. 평온한 배경 위에서 나풀거리는 글자들은 혼잣말처럼 다가와 관객에게 위로와 공감을 건네 줄 것이다.

대형 캔버스에 오일 페인팅을 그림으로써 작업을 시작하는 그는, 시간을 두고 서서히 작품 속에 추가적인 요소들을 더해 나간다. 작은 카툰 캐릭터, 아메리칸 팝을 연상시키는 오브제, 그리고 동물들은 어두운 배경에 경쾌함을 부여하고 이미지에 내러티브를 제공한다. 작품의 제목이 되는 짧은 문장들은 작가가 평소 모아둔 메모나 소설 속 구절들에서 기인하며 작업의 가장 마지막 단계에 추가된다. 그의 풍경 속에 흩어져있는 이러한 속성들은 덧없는 영원함 속 모순된 순간들에서 발견되는 유머와 비극을 끄집어낸다.

Kunath의 작품에 큰 영향을 미친 독일 낭만주의는 기다림, 불안, 무한함 등의 감정에 기반을 둔다. 작가의 작품에는 특히 기다림과 돌아옴에 대한 언급이 자주 등장하는데, 무언가를 그리워하는 마음과 어딘가에 속해 있기를 원하는 수동적인 상태를 시적으로 표현하는 동시에, 새로 시작하고 싶어하는 열망 또한 언뜻 내비친다. 이렇듯 상반된 메시지는 작가의 유머 감각 및 위안과 뒤섞여 캔버스를 완성시킨다. 아이러니와 노스탤지어 가득한 캔버스 속에서 작가가 결국 말하고 싶은 것은 아름다움과 순수에 대한 탐구로 귀결될 수 있다.

테니스광인 작가는 여러 모순적인 감정 사이를 오가는 자기 자신이 마치 라켓 사이를 날아다니는 테니스공 같다고 말한 바 있다. 유독 어두운 컬러가 지배적인 작품들도 그리 무겁게 느껴지지 않는 것은 아마도 이러한 작가의 위트 덕분일 것이다. 아이러니와 멜랑콜리 안에서 그는 여전히 랠리를 이어간다.
