313아트프로젝트 청담스페이스는 9월 8일부터 <Decision to discuss>를 개최한다. 평면, 조각, 설치 작업을 하는 각각의 작가들이 한 자리에서 마주했다면 어떤 담론이 펼쳐졌을 지 상상하며 기획한 전시이다. 다양한 주제와 매체로 작업하는 작가들이 주어진 공간에서 만들어내는 텐션과 긴장감은 관람객들로 하여금 현대 미술이 보여주는 시각적 관점에 대해 논의할 수 있는 기회를 마련해줄 것이다.
다니엘 뷔렌은 모더니즘 미술에 비판적인 시각을 가지고 60년대부터 작품 활동을 시작해, 8.7cm짜리 줄무늬를 통해 전통적인 전시 공간이나 미술적 제도에 국한되지 않는 예술을 추구한다. 주변에서 쉽게 발견할 수 있는 재료에 여러 신기술을 결합하여 자신만의 미적 언어를 구사하는 자비에 베이앙은 작품과 그것이 설치된 공간이 만들어내는 환경에 주목한다. 그는 페인팅, 조각, 설치 등 방대한 작업을 통해 세계의 복잡성을 이해하고 그 이면에 있는 경계를 발견하는 것이 예술의 의미라고 말한다. 독일 출신의 작가 프리드리히 쿠나스는 서정적인 배경에 자신의 솔직한 감정을 대변하는 문장을 넣어, 외로움과 그리움, 떠나감과 남겨짐에 대한 고찰 등 인간의 복잡미묘한 감정을 섬세하고 위트 있게 표현한다.
“생을 추동하는 것, 삶을 체험하는 느낌은 우리가 늘 일상적으로 경험하는 것과 달리 굉장히 기묘하고 낯설 때가 있다. 자연이 움직이는 질서, 우주가 내겐 중요하다. 나는 그걸 온몸으로, 몸을 닮은 그림으로 나타낸다. 내 몸이 24시간 봄 여름 가을 겨울, 그 교차로에 있고, 나는 이 놀라운 자연 앞에 소통의 한 기재로 만들어진 회화를 넘어서 그리는 그 자체가 도달한 무언가에 관심이 있다”라고 말한 제여란의 신작들은 더 대담해진 몸짓과 물감이 뒤엉켜 한층 역동감 넘치는 작업으로 작가 내면의 진솔함까지 느껴지게 한다. 자신의 자전적인 이야기를 현대적인 회화로 풀어내는 지지수의 작업은 그 어느 때보다 자유로워졌다. 우리는 그녀의 지속적인 작업을 통해 내면의 치유와 화해를 모색하고자 하는 작가의 고뇌를 볼 수 있다.
밝고 따뜻한 그림 속에 오래 전부터 작가가 집중하고 고민해온 종교에 대한 심오한 마음의 깊이가 담겨져 있는 우국원의 회화 작업에는 인간의 본질을 꿰뚫는 작가만의 예리함이 숨어있다. 표현 방식의 디테일과 텍스처, 그리고 살아있는 마티에르는 그의 작품 자체를 빛내는 요소로써, 그리고 캔버스에 쓰여진 글을 통해 유추할 수 있는 그의 생각은 보는 이로 하여금 공감과 탄성을 이끌어내며 시선과 마음을 잡아두는 역할로써 작용한다. 시드의 인물화는 얼굴이 잘 알려진 유명인부터 익명의 노숙자까지 하나의 개인을 자세하게 묘사하며, 이 과정에서 뛰어난 색채와 놀라울 만큼의 관찰력으로 밀도 높은 화면을 만들어낸다. 이 젊은 작가는 이들을 동등한 사이즈의 캔버스에 그림으로써 각 개인의 사회적 지위가 그림 속에서 무의미해지는 점에 주목했다. 그라플렉스는 유년기에 누구나 한번쯤 관심을 가지고 좋아하는 추억을 기반으로 그래픽 아트적 요소가 섞인 회화, 조각, 토이 등, 모두에게 익숙하고 이해가 쉬운 작품으로 대중의 공감 및 감동을 얻어낸다.
얼핏 보면 매우 대조적인 이 작가들은 작품을 통해 본인의 내, 외부적 환경을 받아들이고 이해한다는 지점에서 서로 맞닿아있다. 작가들의 국적과 나이는 모두 상이하지만, 이들은 자신의 작품을 중심으로 각자의 독특한 세계를 구축했고 그 안에서 우리와 대화를 시도한다. 이들과 무엇을 논할 수 있을지 고민하고 전시의 형태로 묶어낸 우리의 결심이 관객들에게도 전달되기를 바란다.
313 Art Project Cheongdam Space is delighted to hold <Decision to discuss> from September 8th. This exhibition was planned by imagining what kind of discussion would have unfolded if artists each working on flat surfaces, sculptures, and installations had faced each other in one place. The tension created by artists working with various themes and media in a given space will provide an opportunity for viewers to discuss the visual perspectives of contemporary art.
Daniel Buren started his work in the 1960s with a critical perspective on modernist art, and pursues art that is not limited to traditional exhibition spaces or artistic institutions by covering unconventional spaces with his 8.7cm stripes. Xavier Veilhan, who uses his own aesthetic language by combining various new technologies with materials easily found around him, pays attention to the environment created by the work and the space in which it is installed. He says that the meaning of art is to understand the complexity of the world and discover the boundaries behind it through vast works such as painting, sculpture, and installation. German writer Friedrich Kunath uses sentences that represent his honest feelings in a lyrical background to express the complex and subtle human emotions such as loneliness and longing, leaving and being left behind in a delicate and witty way.
“Inspiring life. Experiencing life. Feeling life is not always mundane. Sometimes it can be very bizarre and uncanny. I try to capture the moment through paintings that are similar to bodies. That is why I always pay special attention to the season, weather, or a dominant feeling of the day that influence my body and consequently lead to contracting or expanding forms of expression,” says Je Yeoran. The artist’s inner sincerity is felt through her recent work that is even more dynamic, with gestures and paints intertwined. Gigisue’s work of unraveling her autobiographical story through modern paintings has become more free than ever. We can see the artist’s anguish to seek inner healing and reconciliation through her continuous work.
In his bright and warm paintings, Woo Kukwon melts deep thoughts about religion, which he has been concentrating on and pondering for a long time. The detail and texture of the expression method, and the living matiere are the elements that make his work shine, and his thoughts that can be inferred from the writing on the canvas play a role in drawing sympathy and resilience from the viewer, capturing the eyes and mind. Sid’s portraits depict a single individual in detail, from well-known celebrities to anonymous homeless people, creating dense scenes with outstanding color and incredible observation. This young artist paid attention to how each individual’s social status becomes meaningless in the painting by drawing them on a canvas of equal size. Grafflex takes inspiration from things that is familiar with and easy to understand, such as paintings, sculptures, and toys, which are mixed with graphic art elements based on memories that everyone must have had at least once in childhood.
These very contrasting artists at first glance are in touch with each other in that they accept and understand their own internal and external environments through their works. Although the nationalities and ages of the artists are all different, they have built their own unique world around their work and try to communicate with us in it. We hope that our determination and decision, which we have contemplated about what we can discuss with them, will be conveyed to the audience through this exhibition.
