313 Art Project is delighted to present ‘Landscape beyond perspective’ featuring Teresita Fernandez, Ena Swansea, and Kiki Smith. The exhibition aims to explore new ways of perceiving landscape through the eyes of these three artists living and working in New York.
Teresita Fernandez(b. 1968) questions the way we perceive land and landscape, and leads us to rethink it in historical and political context. Through works that reveal the intimacy between matter, humans, and land, she reminds us that the world is largely shaped by imperialism and violence, and that there are more invisible things than the visible. Her works are poetic and beautiful, but the fundamental questions embedded in them makes us reconsider the way we see our surrounding environment and the others around us.
Kiki Smith(b. 1954) has been incorporating various motifs such as human body, women, and nature in her oeuvre since 1980s. There is a deep curiosity about human body and anatomy underlying in her works, which she has been growing since young age. Interest in skin, which acts as a barrier between a human being and the world, led to sculptures depicting certain body parts or inner organs, and with narratives added, Smith’s works took the form of recreating feminists in history in her own way. The small sculpture of a girl that is on display in this exhibition has appeared repeatedly in Smith’s works. Representing fragility, weakness, and strength, the girl stands alone naked in the white cube, giving light to the environment around her.
Ena Swansea(b. 1966) is interested in materials that change role and meaning with time. Portraits have always existed, but there is a large gap between a figure painted in the past and one painted today. This is clearly visible in The Green Line, Swansea’s homage of Matisse’s work. In a similar way, haystacks or beaches always stand where they have been. However, depending on when the piece is being painted, the expression changes. This made the foundation for Swansea’s unique way of painting with graphite, which makes the scenery look like it’s under moonlight when it’s actually during the day.
Each of these three artists leaves the audience face to face with new landscape. Diverse forms of work including painting, installation, and sculpture expands our experience, away from familiar geography. The landscape beyond the perspectives of these artists is still standing there, pushing its frontiers little by little even now.
313은 ‘Landscape beyond perspective’ 전시를 통해 테레시타 페르난데즈, 에나 스완시, 키키 스미스의 작품을 선보인다. 뉴욕에 거주하며 작업하고 있는 이 세 명의 여류 작가의 시선으로 풍경을 대하는 새로운 관점을 탐색하고자 한다.
테레시타 페르난데즈(b. 1968)는 땅과 풍경을 받아들이는 방법에 질문을 던지고, 역사적이며 권력적인 맥락에서 주변 환경을 인식할 수 있도록 이끈다. 물질, 인간, 그리고 지역이 서로 얼마나 밀접하게 연관되어 있는지 드러내는 작업을 통해, 식민주의와 보이지 않는 폭력이 어떻게 현재의 세상을 만들었으며 때로는 우리가 보는 것보다 보지 못하는 것들이 훨씬 많을 수 있다는 점을 상기시킨다. 그녀의 작업은 시적이며 아름답지만, 그 안에 내재된 근본적인 질문들은 우리로 하여금 주변 환경과 각자의 존재를 바라보는 시각을 재고하게 한다.
키키 스미스(b. 1954)는 1980년대부터 다양한 소재를 활용해 인간의 몸, 여성, 자연 등의 모티브를 실험적인 방법으로 표현해왔다. 그녀의 작품 세계의 중심에는 유년기부터 키워온 신체에 대한 호기심이 존재한다. 세상으로부터 나의 존재를 보호해주는 연약한 피부에 대한 관심은 특정 신체 부위나 장기를 재현하는 조각으로 연결되었고, 차츰 내러티브를 더해 나가면서 역사 속 페미니스트를 재조명하는 작업으로까지 이어졌다. 특히, 이번 전시에서 선보이는 여자아이의 신체 조각은 스미스의 작업에 반복적으로 등장해온 소재로, 몸의 소멸성, 유약함, 그리고 강인함을 대변하는 오브제이며 큰 공간 안에 홀로 존재함으로써 주변 환경을 드러내는 역할을 한다.
에나 스완시(b. 1966)는 시간이 흐름에 따라 역할과 의미가 변해가는 소재에 관심이 많다. 인물을 묘사하는 초상화는 오래 전부터 존재해왔지만 과거의 그림 속 요소와 현 시대의 그림에 나타나는 인물 사이에는 많은 것이 달라져 있다. 이는 마티스의 작업을 오마주한 The Green Line 등의 초상화 작업에서도 드러난다. 건초더미나 바다 또한 늘 그곳에 있지만, 그리는 시점에 따라 표현 방법이 달라진다. 이는 낮의 풍경임에도 달빛을 받은 것처럼 표현하는 등 흑연을 활용한 스완시 특유의 페인팅 기법을 만든 기반이 되었다.
이 세 작가들은 관람객들에게 각자 자신만의 시선으로 새로운 풍경을 마주하게 한다. 회화, 설치, 평면조각 등 다양한 형태의 작품들은 익숙한 지형에서 벗어나 관객의 경험을 확장시킨다. 이들이 만들어낸 시야 너머의 풍경은 여전히 그곳에 존재하며 계속해서 그 지평을 넓히고 있다.
