Je Yeoran Solo Exhibition

313아트프로젝트는 2024년 6월 12일부터 7월 20일까지 제여란의 개인전을 개최한다. 작가의 대표적인 시리즈 Usquam Nusquam의 100호 연작으로 이어진 전시실은 하나의 큰 에너지가 분출하는 모습이며, 작가가 35년간 천착해온 작업 세계를 집약하여 보여준다.

“선과 색은 어느새 화면이라는 구조의 틀을 벗어나며, 순식간에 생겨난 형들은 전경과 측면에서도 융합된다. 선은 완전히 자율적인 대상이 되며 지배적인 형상화의 원칙을 벗어나게 된다. 내게 중요한 것은 엄격한 규칙이나 의도에 따라 작업하는 것이 아니라 자발적 예술의 형식 언어와 회화적 몸짓을 다루는 원칙이다.” -작가 노트 中

제여란은 전신의 움직임을 이용한 수행적 회화 작업을 펼쳐오며 기존 추상 회화의 사조에 통합되지 않는 자신만의 예술적 흐름을 이끌어왔다. 몸의 궤적을 기록한 그의 회화는 액션 페인팅에 기반하지만, 일회적인 우연성을 담아내는데 그치지 않고 작가가 감각하는 완전의 경지에 이를 때까지 행위가 반복되기에 화면은 압도적인 밀도와 독자적인 시각 언어로 완성된다.

전시에서 소개되는 Usquam Nusquam 시리즈는 작가가 내면 에너지의 충동을 따라가며 만들어낸 움직임의 회화이다. 작가는 스퀴지를 사용해 작업을 완성하며, 붓이라는 도구가 가지는 통제성과 인위성에서 벗어나 끊임없이 변화하는 작가 내면의 에너지를 캔버스에 그대로 풀어낸다. 그는 자신이 감각한 계절과 날씨, 생사와 희로애락 등의 일상적 상황들이 마치 실타래처럼 둥글게 감겨있다면, 회화 작업은 이를 풀어 무언가를 직조하는 일과 흡사하다고 말한다. 내면에서 촉발된 감각적 자극에서부터 작업이 출동하며, 그림 안에서 생겨나는 에너지와 전체가 이끄는 방향 사이에서 이루어지는 움직임에 집중하며 회화를 완성해나간다.

313 Art Project holds a solo exhibition of Je Yeoran from June 12th to July 20th. Each exhibition room displays a burst of immense energy with aligned presentations of Usquam Nusquam series, also known for the work from the artist’s 35 dedicated years.

“Line and color deviate from the framework of the structure of the screen, and the forms that emerge in an instant are also fused in the foreground and side. Line becomes a completely autonomous object and deviates from the dominant shaping principle. What is important to me is not to work according to strict rules or intentions, but to deal with the formal language and pictorial gestures of voluntary art.” -Artist statement

Je has been working on performative painting using the movement of the whole body, leading her own artistic flow that is not integrated into the existing trend of abstract painting. Her paintings that record the trajectory of her body are based on her actions, but the canvas is completed with overwhelming density and independent visual language as the actions are repeated until reaching the level of perfection that the artist senses.

The Usquam Nusquam series displayed in the exhibition is a painting created by a tool called squeegee, releasing the artist’s ever-changing inner energy on the canvas. She claims that if the everyday situations such as the season and weather she senses, life and death, joy, sorrow, and pleasure are wrapped in a circle like a thread, painting work is similar such progress of unwinding and weaving. Work is dispatched from the sensory stimulation triggered by the inside, and the painting is completed by focusing on the energy generated in the painting and the movement made between the direction led by the whole.
