In Insights sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2017, 313 Art Project will exhibit Kiwon Park’s Space of Extinction and Creation which merges his installation and painting works in a balanced state. Space of Extinction and Creation is composed of Ruin, an installation work covering walls and floor with dyed wooden paper, and Park’s representative painting series called Width.
In Ruin, Park makes use of black-dyed wooden papers to highlight an empty space and a fundamental depth of it. The wooden papers convey the atmosphere of a burned-out site full of ash and reveal the zero state, where every value fades away and nothing remains.
Among the installation work of Ruin will be the Width series in various red hues. Park has been dedicated to the Width series since 2005 to visualize emptiness and original form of a space on a flat surface. He divides a canvas into few surfaces delivering the specific atmosphere he recognizes in a space and fills each surface with a myriad numbers of lines. Amongst the nothingness and extinction of Ruin, the Width series of increasing red tones bring the new energy and create sublime beauty highlighting birth and growth of mankind and nature.
Park’s Space of Extinction and Creation will be formed with the new materials that have not been introduced to Art Basel Hong Kong and be noticed by spatial perfection conjoining not only opposite values of extinction and creation but also the works of different genres and characteristics. By doing so, 313 Art Project will encourage audiences to perceive the exhibiting space with totally new perception and values.
Kiwon Park, who has been awarded as Artist of the Year by Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, has recently had solo exhibitions, including “Growing Space,” 313 Art Project, Seoul (2016) and “Hidden Surface,” Galleria Continua, Beijing (2016). He has also joined diverse group exhibitions, such as “As the Moon waxes and wanes,” Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Korea (2016), 313 Art Project’s collaborative international exhibitions called “Spheres,” Moulins, France (2015, 2014), “Into Thin Air,” Keumho Art Museum, Seoul (2015), “Dior Esprit,” DDP, Seoul (2015), Busan Museum of Art, Busan (2013), Amore Pacific Museum of Art, Yongin, Korea (2013). He also had solo exhibitions at various internationally renowned art organizations like Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Arko Art Center, Seoul, and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. Moreover, he had represented the Korean pavilion at 51st Venice Biennale.
Since 2010, 313 Art Project has introduced internationally renowned artists, such as Daniel Buren, Sophie Calle, Tony Oursler, and Xavier Veilhan, to Korean art scene. It has also proposed Korean artists of various ages, including Lee Wan, who is going to represent Korean Pavilion at 2017 Venice Biennale, and Kiwon Park, who delivers the balanced harmony between painting and installation works.
As 313 Art Project moves to a new space this year in Sungbuk dong, a cultural center of Gangbuk, it will not only continue the existing context but also start a new project called ‘Sungbuk dong Project’. It has reflected about a role as a young gallery and prepared for about a year to start ‘Sungbuk dong Project’. This project will be composed of solo exhibitions of emerging artists in 30s and 40s. With these artists, 313 Art Project is going to highlight Korean values, while leading international audiences to feel sympathy. Moreover, it will focus on the role of introducing young Korean artists and reinforce the position of Korean art in the international art scene.
2017 Art Basel Hong Kong Insights에서 313아트프로젝트는 박기원 작가가 설치 및 회화 작품으로 구현한 ‘소멸과 탄생의 공간 (Space of Extinction and Creation)’을 선보인다. 부스는 먹물로 채색된 무늬목으로 바닥과 벽을 감싸며 완성되는 설치 작품 파멸(Ruin)과 작가의 대표적인 회화 시리즈 넓이(Width)로 구성된다.
파멸(Ruin)은 검은색 무늬목을 사용해 공간 전체가 타서 재가 되어버린 듯한 느낌을 연출하고, 가장 근본적인 깊이만이 남아있는 텅 빈 공간을 보여주는 설치 작품이다. 검은 먹물을 입히고 말린 상태의 무늬목은 모든 것이 사라져 아무것도 없는, 아무것도 아닌 ‘제로’의 상태를 재현한다.
설치 작품 파멸 위로 다양한 붉은 색채를 띠는 넓이 시리즈가 전시된다. 2005년부터 시작된 회화 연작 넓이는 장소의 여백과 원형성에 대한 관심을 평면 위에 구현한 작업이다. 작가가 크게 나눈 몇 개의 면은 작가가 경험한 공간 속의 특정한 상황을 나타내며, 각각의 면은 무수한 선이 겹쳐지며 채워진다. 모든 물질이 다 타버린 것 같은 제로 상태의 공간 속 엷은 붉은 색에서 시작하여 점차 톤이 상기되는 넓이 시리즈는 모든 것이 소멸된 공간 속에 새로운 생명의 에너지를 불러일으키며 인간과 자연의 숭고한 탄생, 그리고 성숙 과정을 나타낸다.
아트 바젤 홍콩에서 시도된 적 없는 새로운 재료의 사용, 그리고 서로 다른 장르/성격의 작품이 소멸과 생성의 의미를 형성하는 완결된 공간 구성을 통해 313아트프로젝트의 Insights 전시는 관람객에게 공간 본래의 모습을 새로운 감각으로 재인식하는 경험을 선사할 것이다.
국립현대미술관에 의해 올해의 작가로 선정된 바 있는 박기원은 2016년 313 아트프로젝트에서 <Growing Space>, Galleria Continua Beijing 에서 <Hidden Surface> 개인전, 국립현대미술관 30주년 <달은, 차고, 이지러진다> 전시 및 프랑스 파리 인근에서 개최된 313 아트프로젝트의 해외 협업 프로젝트 <SPHERES> (2015, 2014), 서울 금호 미술관 <옅은 공기 속으로 (Into Thin Air)> (2015), 서울 DDP <디올정신> (2015), 부산 시립미술관 (2013), 아모레 퍼시픽 미술관 (2013) 등의 그룹 전시에도 참가하였다. 그리고 국립현대미술관, 아르코 미술관, 스페인 마드리드 레이나 소피아 미술관 (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia) 등의 세계 유수 기관에서 개인전을 가졌을 뿐 아니라, 2005년 제 51회 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 전시에도 참여하였다.
2010년에 개관한 313 아트프로젝트는 다니엘 뷔렌, 소피 칼, 토니 아워슬러, 자비에 베이앙 등 세계에서 주목받는 해외 작가들의 국내 전시 및 2017년 베니스 비엔날레 한국관을 대표하는 젊은 작가 이완, 설치 미술과 회화의 적절한 조화를 이끌어내는 중견 작가 박기원 등의 전시를 선보여왔다. 313아트프로젝트는 기존에 이어온 국내외 작가의 작품 세계를 균형적으로 선보이는 프로그램을 기반으로 하는 동시에 2017년에는 ‘성북동 프로젝트’를 통해 한국적이지만 세계인의 공감을 이끌어내는 전시를 선보이고, 국제 미술계에 젊은 한국 작가들을 소개하며 한국 현대 미술의 입지를 더욱 굳건히 다지는 역할에 노력하고자 한다.
