Working in Nates, Florian & Michael Quistrebert brothers have dedicated their time to experimenting with the limits of perception, matter, and concept on paintings and video works. Always on the lookout for newly emerging schools, movements, and ideas, the brothers exaggerate the use of matter to create a figuration of abstract art. The brothers state that the ones who complete the artworks are the artists themselves, not the viewers; their aim is to disarm the viewer’s resistance in interpretation and enchant them in entirety.

The Overlight series, which was introduced at the brothers’ monographic exhibition at Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2016, depicts their proficiency in manipulating the medium of light. Modeling paste poured over the canvas creates an overflow of curves and ripples, on top of which iridescent car paint coats the surface. A direct source of light in the form of LED light bulbs are embedded into the work, shedding light on the reflective surface, from which the viewers can catch glimpses of their own faces and movement. The artists also installed their works on the rotating poles so that the paintings develop endlessly in the viewers’ gaze rather than being solely fixed inside the frame. While the Overlight series comprises of the basic elements of painting such as the light, texture of matters, and gestural marks of the brushwork, it simultaneously generates extreme, sensational visual effect with its reflective surface and intrusive light sources.

Recent solo exhibitions of the brothers include Centre de Création Contemporaine (CCCOD), Tours, France (2019); solo show <Shining Mud> at 313 Art Project, Seoul (2019); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016), and Dundee Contemporary Arts, UK (2015). They have also exhibited in Domaine Pommery, Reims (2019); EYEfilmuseum, Amsterdam (2018); Juliette Jongma, Amsterdam (2017); Plateau/FRAC Île-de-France, Paris (2015); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris (2012).

World Masters of Projection Mapping Award를 수상했다. 주요 개인전으로는 Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016); Dundee Contemporary Arts, UK (2015)에서, 그룹전으로는 Domaine Pommery, Reims (2019); EYEfilmuseum, Amsterdam (2018); Juliette Jongma, Amsterdam (2017); Plateau/FRAC Île-de-France, Paris (2015); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013); Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris (2012) 등이 있다.
