Ralph Fleck is a renowned German artist and is currently a professor in the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremburg. He reacts to his surroundings in a sensitive manner and strives to portray his reflections through painting. Fleck uses various objects related to his own experience as theme of his works – including a summer vacation scene, a landscape of a city with its alleyways, and a shelf stacked with books. To the artist, a theme or motif of paintings means no more than a tool for completing the action of painting. He tries to show the new possibilities of paintings in contemporary art, which is in process of reorganization driven by new media.

One can see a very thick matière in Fleck’s painting. By forming a thick layer of color on canvas, Fleck continues his works in somewhere between realism and abstractionism. His works on canvas always present a full scenery to the audience, such as that of fanatically cheering crowd of diverse yet faceless people, people enjoying their vacation at the beach, and a bookcase full of technical books. Fleck takes a picture of an object or scenery before painting. The images capturing certain moments evolve into a painting through the artist’s creativity. His paintings exhibit a static and dense composition, as well as mobile scene generated from dynamic brush strokes. Such style allows the artist to maintain distance and intimacy at the same time between the audience and his works.

Ralph Fleck’s works have been exhibited in various places including 313 Art Project (2021, 2019, 2013, 2010); Museum Küppersmühle, Duisburg, Germany (2015); Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg, Germany (2014); Forum Kunst, Rottweil, Germany (2012); Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Germany (2011); Kunst Raum, Rottweiil (2011); Augustiner Museum, Freiburg (2011); Museum de Gegenwar, Berlin (2011); Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland (2008);  Kunsthaus, Hamburg, Germany (2004); Museum of Contemporary Art, Bukarest (2004); Museum Voor Moderne Kuste in Ostende, Belgium (2003); and many more. Additionally, his works are collected by a number of art institutions including Sprengel-Museum, Hannover; Bundesbildungministerium, Bonn; Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporaneo, Madrid; and Kunsthaus Zurich.
