Until the Peonies Bloom
모란이 피기까지는

The solo exhibition of Heryun Kim was inspired from the poem “Until the Peonies Bloom”, which was included in A Collection of YongRang’s Poems, 1935 written by the eponymous late poet. The poet expressed his sorrows of Japanese colonization. Peonies appear in many works of artists as it traditionally symbolizes wealth and fame. Heryun Kim, who stumbled upon YongRang Kim’s poem by chance at his birthplace, portrays a different view of peonies that is beautiful, magnificent, and tragic.
Through her interaction with YongRang’s “Until the Peonies Bloom”, Kim depicts Korea in the 21st century that bears sorrow and despair from a period of colonization and a divided nation.
전시에서 작가는 시인 김영랑의 ‹영랑시집, 1935› 에 수록된 ‘모란이 피기까지는’의 시에서 영감을 받아 슬프고 애련한 모란이라는 꽃을 그려낸다. 모란이라는 꽃은 예로부터 부와 영화를 상징해 예로부터 그림의 소재로 자주 등장했지만, 김혜련은 우연히 방문한 김영랑 생가에서 읊게 된 시 ‹모란이 피기까지는› 을 통해 화려하고 아름다운 그러나 비극적인 꽃 모란의 진정한 의미를 발견한다.
작가는 일제강점기의 가슴 아픔과 허무함을 간접적으로 그려낸 시 ‹모란이 피기까지는› 과의 교감을 통해 화려한 꽃에 빗댄 존재의 서러움과 절박함 그리고 분단과 고통이라는 시대의 절망까지 껴안은 21세기 한국의 모습을 모란꽃을 통해 보여 주고자 한다.
