Jon Kessler graduated from State University of New York (SUNY), Purchase in 1980, and is now a professor in Columbia University. Jon Kessler is best known as a kinetic artist who explicitly shows all mechanisms regarding how a machine works. Studying and working with mechanic sculpture for about 30 years, the artist made much effort to differentiate his works for this exhibition from the works of his past, which were more suited for museums. His works often combine centuries-old analogue mechanism with digital technology to explore the runoff of consumerist, post-utopian societies. By receiving the artist’s message with the help of modern technology, the viewer is able to realise the development of technology and at the same time experience a sense of fear.
존 케슬러는 1980년 State University of New York (SUNY), Purchase에서 졸업한 뒤 현재 Columbia 대학에서 교수로 재직중이다. 존 케슬러는 기계의 모든 메커니즘을 적나라하게 보여주는 Kinetic Art 작가로 잘 알려져 있다. 30년 가까이 기계조각에 집중해 온 작가는 한국에서 최초로 열리는 이번 전시를 위해, 주로 미술관 위주로 전시했던 과거 작품들과는 차별을 주려고 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그는 오래된 아날로그 기술과 디지털 기술을 조합하여 유토피아 이후 사회의 소비지상주의의 쇠락을 폭로한다. 현대 기술을 차용해 전하고자 하는 메세지를 언급함으로써, 관객은 그 기술의 발전을 실감하는 동시에 두려움을 체험하게 된다.
