A Diligent Attitude Towards a Meaningless Thing

Lee Wan, who has represented the Korean Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, examines the contemporary social structure with a keen perspective and reinterprets them through various visual media. He has been capturing the inescapable social structure that enforces de-individualized roles through his works.
In 2017, 313 ART PROJECT presents 8 emerging artists with various styles and themes. Lee Wan’s Diligent Attitude Towards a Meaningless Thing marks the first exhibition of through which the artist questions what it is to be diligent about a meaningful goal through his painting and film series.
In his quintessential series, Diligent Attitude Towards a Meaningless Thing, Lee employs contract workers to fill the entire canvas with a single color using a size one brush over the span of four days, and then the artist himself finishes the painting by brushing down the canvas in a single stroke from the brush made to fit the entire width of the canvas. The painting, ordered by the artist as an employer and a consumer, fails be meaningful to neither to the workers nor the artist, and instead merely functions as the outcome of diligent efforts to fulfill a contract. Through the series, Lee warns against the future in which individuals are caught in the chain of labor and consumption enforced by the societal structure.
The film series Made In records Lee’s visits to twelve Asian countries where he produces everything needed for a breakfast, including rice, chopsticks, and sugar by himself. Through his personal participation in the production of all the ingredients, he demonstrates the interconnectedness of political, economic, social, and cultural issues in the post-colonial era reflected in daily products.
Winning the first ‘Art Spectrum Artist Award’ by Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in 2014, Lee Wan had solo exhibitions at 313 ART PROJECT in 2015 and 2017, and at Daegu Art Museum in 2013. He joined group exhibitions including Korean Pavilion, The 57st Venice Biennale (2017), SPHERES, Galleria Continua, Les Moulins (2014, 2015); Buk Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul (2015); and the Gwangju Biennale (2014).
2017년 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 대표 작가로 선정된 이완은 현대 사회 구조에 대한 통찰을 시각 효과로 재현하는 작가이다. 그는 개인에게 일관된 기준과 역할을 강요하는 사회 구조의 불가항력을 포착하고 표현하는 작업을 지속해오고 있다.
313아트프로젝트는 2017년 한 해 동안 다양한 표현 방식과 주제를 가진 신진 작가 8명의 개인전을 개최한다. 이 성북동 프로젝트의 첫 전시인 ‹무의미한 것에 대한 성실한 태도›는 현대 사회에서 ‘의미 있는 것에 성실히 사는 것’이 무엇인지에 대한 질문을 던지며 회화 작품과 메이드인 영상 작업을 선보인다.
무의미한 것에 대한 성실한 태도는 작가에 의해 고용된 일용직 노동자들이 한 사람 당 캔버스 한 점을 사흘에 걸쳐 채색한 후 그 위에 작가가 아무 의미 없이 낙서하듯 붓질의 흔적을 남긴 회화 시리즈이다. 소비자인 작가가 요구하는대로 만들어진 그림은 작가와 노동자 그 누구에게도 작품으로서 의미를 가지지 못하며 단지 계약을 이행한 성실한 흔적만이 남아있을 뿐이다. 작가는 이 회화 시리즈를 통해 사람들이 계속해서 무의미한 것에 성실한 태도를 가지게 되면 미래에는 사회 시스템이 제시하는 노동과 소비 구조에 모두가 길들여진 몰개성한 시대가 도래할지 모른다고 경고한다.
메이드인 시리즈는 한 끼의 아침 식사를 스스로 완성하는 것을 목표로 작가가 아시아의 12개국을 방문하여 식사에 필요한 쌀, 젓가락, 설탕 등의 재료를 제작하는 과정을 담은 영상 작업이며, 이번 전시에서는 시리즈 중 중국과 대만 편을 선보인다. 중국 편에서 작가는 천 년 된 수도원의 마루 바닥 나무를 깎아 나무 젓가락을 만들어, 천 년의 역사가 단지 한 번의 식사로 소모될 나무 젓가락이 되어버리는 과정을 보여준다. 이것은 신자유주의 경제 구조 속에서 가치와 의미가 변질되고 있는 아시아의 현실에 대해 이야기한다. 그리고 대만 편은 작가가 사탕 수수 농장에서 한 달간 머무르며 직접 설탕을 생산하는 모든 공정에 참여하는 모습을 촬영한 것으로, 우리가 일상적으로 사용하는 생산품 속에도 탈식민지 이후의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화의 모든 인과들이 정교하게 연결되어 있음을 보여준다.
2014년 삼성미술관 리움 선정 제 1회 아트스펙트럼 작가상을 수상한 이완은 2015년 313아트프로젝트, 2013년 대구 미술관에서 각각 개인전을 열었다. 그룹전으로는 2014, 2015년 프랑스 Galleria Continua, Les Moulins에서 개최된 ‹SPHERES›전, 2015년 북서울미술관, 2014년 광주 비엔날레 등에 참여하였다.
