Lee Kunyong, a pioneer of Korean performance art and a leading figure of the 1970s AG and ST groups, established a distinct methodology centered on the body. Following Corporal Term (1971), which conceptually expanded art by relocating natural elements onto the gallery floor, his participation in the 1973 Paris Biennale solidified his realization that the artist’s own body is the ultimate medium. Departing from traditional materials like stone or wood, Lee treated his body as an index, mapping physical constraints—such as arm length and stride—directly onto the canvas. This integration of mundane, repetitive actions into performance formats birthed his seminal Bodyscape series.

His inquiry targets the logical relationship between the body, the viewer's gaze, and space. In The Logic of Place (1975), Lee explored how spatial definitions shift with physical movement, a conceptual line that evolved into his signature "Method of Drawing." By painting under strict physical restrictions—such as standing behind, beside, or with his back to the canvas—Lee records pure bodily perception without looking at the surface. Through this, he subverted traditional painting by fundamentally altering the artist's physical positioning during the creative act.

Believing the body is the most direct artistic vehicle, Lee rejects random "happenings" for a structured, analytical approach he terms "event-logical." This interplay of creation and erasure is epitomized in Snail’s Gallop (1979), where he crawls to draw lines on the floor while simultaneously stepping forward to erase them with his feet. Now in his eighties, Lee remains an active contemporary force, constantly recontextualizing his historic practices to engage with changing times and audiences.
