이슬아는 지난 10년간 도시가 자아내는 빛과 그림자, 그리고 그 안을 채우는 풍경과 인간의 군상을 주시하며 이를 회화로 아카이브해 온 화가이다. 특정 장소에 머물며 축적된 감각과 시간의 변화를 화면에 구축해 온 작가에게, 도시는 선과 면, 그리고 수많은 ‘네모’로 가득 찬 그리기의 매력적인 오브제다. 최근 작가의 조형적 탐색은 비어 있는 하얀 공간인 첫 보금자리를 마련한 경험을 계기로, 빌딩 숲 속 수많은 창문 너머의 타인들에게로 확장된다. 동일한 콘크리트 구조와 네모난 디지털 화면 속에서 따로 또 같이 모호하게 연결되어 살아가는 현대인의 삶은 이슬아 회화의 핵심적인 서사이자 미학적 토대가 된다.

그녀의 작업에서 도시는 화창한 낮에는 하늘을 반사하는 유리의 푸름으로, 밤에는 저마다의 불빛으로 매일 다르게 변주되는 유기적인 공간이다. 빽빽한 파사드와 회색조의 획일적인 패턴 속에서, 인간은 이 경직된 격자형 공간을 유일하게 흔들고 동력을 불어넣는 존재로 등장한다. 주말마다 빨래방에서 시간을 보내거나 홀로 침대에 누워 스마트폰 화면에 기대면서도 별을 그리워하는 도시인들의 파편화된 루틴은, 빛과 그림자가 만들어내는 미시적인 조형적 균열과 결합한다. 목적 없는 관찰자이자 동시에 도시의 무언의 주인공으로서 작가가 걸어온 길과 마주친 건축적 파편들은 캔버스라는 또 다른 네모 위에서 유기적으로 재구성된다. 이처럼 이슬아의 회화는 균일화된 도시의 차가운 표면 아래 흐르는 저마다의 온기와 서정성을 포착하며 무구한 사유의 공간을 환기시킨다.

Seula Lee is a painter who has spent the past decade archiving the fluid patterns of urban life, documenting how light, shadow, and color intersect to shape cityscapes and human figures. Grounded in close observations of specific locales, her practice records how sensory impressions of a place accumulate and evolve over time. For Lee, the city—composed of sharp lines, rigid planes, and endless grids of "squares"—serves as a compelling aesthetic object. Her recent formal inquiry expanded outwards after she moved into her first home, a stark, empty white room. This personal experience triggered a deep curiosity about the other windows filling the cityscape, examining how urbanites live within identical concrete structures, connected yet isolated through their square digital devices.

In her work, the city functions as an organic canvas that dynamically shifts each day, reflecting clouds across glass facades under the morning sun and glowing with artificial lights by night. Amidst the dense gray architecture and uniform patterns, the human presence emerges as the sole element capable of disrupting and animating the rigid spatial order. Lee captures the fragmented, everyday routines of city dwellers—those spending their weekends at a laundromat, or scrolling through smartphones in bed while longing for the distant stars—and weaves them into the microscopic structural fractures created by light and shadow. Serving simultaneously as an aimless observer and a silent protagonist, Lee gathers the paths she has walked and the architecture she has encountered to reconfigure them onto the square plane of the canvas. Ultimately, her paintings capture the warmth and inherent lyricism flowing beneath the city's standardized surface, transforming a cold concrete labyrinth into a profound space for contemplation.
