Andrew Dadson is an emerging Canadian artist who utilizes various mediums such as painting, installation, and photography to produce works that straddle the physical boundaries of time and space. Having presented groundbreaking works that extend beyond the discipline of painting at Art Basel Unlimited 2015, Dadson has captivated collectors from all around the world with his unique process of applying paint repeatedly onto the canvas to form a thick solid mass to create works that question the beginning and the end of each artwork.

Dadson’s signature Re-stretched series begin with a brightly colored background but end in a black-and-white monochromatic surface. Before the paint solidifies, the artist scrapes the surface, pushing the layers of excess paint to the four corners of the canvas, creating a wave-like layer that threatens to crash over the edge. Once the form dries, the canvas fabric is removed and fitted onto a larger structure. The layers of paint formed along the edges of the canvas form a ridge-like texture, therefore revealing the facets that were not manipulated, the work furthermore extending beyond what can be seen by the viewers. The thick mass of paint on the sides of the surface formulate a new boundary, transforming itself into a sculpture and visualizing the materiality of painting. Dadson not only physically but fundamentally expands the boundaries of painting, questioning the limitations and boundaries of mediums, pioneering the originality of his works.

Having graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2003, Andrew Dadson has held multiple solo exhibitions at various locations, including at Galleria Franco Noero (2017), Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (2017), Raebervon Stenglin (2016), David Kordansky Gallery (2015), and Henry Art Gallery (2012). He has also participated in various group exhibitions, of which include Galerie Mehdi Chouakri (2018), Metropolitan Art Society (2015), Vancouver Art Gallery (2012), and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2010). In 2011, Dadson has received The Brink Award for emerging new artists within the Canada, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia region.

앤드류 다드슨은 캐나다 벤쿠버에서 회화, 공연, 드로잉 등 여러 매체로 추상적 작업을 하는 현대예술 작가이다. 그의 전작은 일관되게 시간과 공간에 연관된 경계에 대한 개념에 집중해왔다. 그는 오래되고 진중한 역사를 지닌 단색화라는 장르적 한계에 대해 질문하고 재해석하는 작업을 한다. 그의 작업은 밝은 색상의 밑 작업으로 시작해서 흑백의 표면작업으로 마무리한다. 그의 작업은 그만의 페인트를 두껍게 다루는 방식으로 두드러지는 물감층들이 긁히고, 밀쳐지고, 훑어져 쌓여가며 작업의 시작과 끝, 그 경계에 질문하는 독특한 작품을 만들어낸다.

그의 Re-stretched 시리즈는 캔버스 위 물감층을 각 네 모서리를 향해 긁어내고, 마르면 캔버스를 틀에서 벗겨내어 더 큰 틀에 씌운 연작이다. 긁어진 물감층은 캔버스의 가장자리를 따라 양각한 듯 산등성이 같은 모습을 형성한다. 그렇게 캔버스의 보이는 면이 확장되면서 틀 뒤에 고정되어 작업 되지 않았던 면이 드러나고, 가장자리에 쌓였던 두꺼운 물감 테두리는 화면을 구성하며 조각과 흡사한 형태를 가지며 시각적 물질성을 가지게 된다.

앤드류 다드슨은 캐나다 예술 공립대학교 에밀리카 대학교를 2003년에 졸업하고 그해 Helen Pitt 갤러리에서 열렸던 그의 첫 개인전을 시작으로 그는 국제적으로 이름을 알리며 캐나다와 프랑스, 독일, 이탈리아, 벨기에, 스위스 그리고 미국에서 개인전과 단체전을 가졌다. 그는 2007년부터 현재까지 지속적해서 이탈리아 튜린에 위치한 Galleria Franco Noero에서 정기적으로 전시를 열고 있다. 개인전으로는 Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (2017), Raebervon Stenglin, Zurich, Switzerland (2016), David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles (2015), Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle (2012)에서 전시를 가졌다. 그룹전으로는 Galerie Mehdi Chouakri, Berlin (2018), Metropolitan Art Society, Beirut, Lebanon (2015), Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada (2012), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, USA (2010)에서 전시했다. 그는 워싱턴, 오레곤, 브리티시 컬럼비아에서 활동하는 유망한 신진 작가에게 수여 하는 The Brink 어워드를 2011년에 수상했다.
