Inspired by architectures of different times and places, Seonghi Bahk incorporates fundamental architectural elements such as stairs, pillars, and arches and combines them with various materials. By installing artworks on the ceiling, or more precisely, suspending them in the air, the artist strives to reach a complete balance between his works and their environment. Through these interactions, the artist explores the ultimate value of ‘harmony’. He analyzes ‘air’ through an architectural lens, as it fill the space but remains invisible to the eyes. His hanging of the works in the air best visualizes such characteristic in a metaphoric manner.
Bahk’s major series of works, titled “Aggregation”, explores human cognition through materiality. The artist dismantles the cognitive boundary between the concrete and the abstract by completing a whole work from myriad of small piece. Believing charcoal to be the purest element that encompasses the principles of nature, Bahk makes symbolic use of the material from drawing to installation. Alongside his installation pieces charcoal, the artist always presents his sketches of wood–such visual juxtaposition stands for the author’s unique perspective on the existence of each object.
Furthermore, it is the artist’s intent that the viewers utilize multiple sense in a complex way to appreciate his works, rather than relying passively on a single instinct. The artist brings together acrylics and crystal, which transmit all light that passes, and creates a stunning burst of light into a space by making use of their interaction with light and air. He also differentiates the degree of light concentration or the density of materials so that the viewers can appreciate the vibrant gradation of light. Through such continuous projection of multiple sensory stimuli, the artist ultimately brings out various psychological and unconscious reactions underlying the human nature.
Seonghi Bahk graduated from Chung-Ang University majoring in Sculpture and continued his study in Milan, at Brera Academy of Fine Arts afterwards. Following his active exhibition career throughout Europe including Museo della Permanente in Milan (2015) and Saatchi Gallery in London (Korean Eye) (2012, 2009), he had several solo exhibitions in Korea including Daegu Health College Indang Museum (2021), Kim Sechoong Museum in Seoul (2019), Cheonan Arts Center (2018), Seoul Arts Center – Hangaram Art Museum (2017, 2012) and Seoul Museum of Art (2010). His works are publicly installed in Incheon International Airport and Shilla Hotel, Seoul, and are collected by many other public institutions and private collections.
시대를 넘나드는 여러 건축 양식으로부터 받은 영감을 바탕으로, 박선기는 계단과 기둥 그리고 아치와 같이 하나의 건축물을 완성하는 여러 구성 요소들을 다양한 재료와 결합하여 시각화한다. 작가는 작품을 천장에 설치해 공중에 매닮으로써 작품과 공간 사이의 완전한 균형을 의도한다. 이러한 결합을 통해 작가는 ‘조화로움’이 가지는 궁극적 의미를 탐구한다. 그는 눈에 보이지는 않지만 실제로는 공간을 가득 채우고 있는 ‘공기’의 존재에 주목하여, 더욱 건축학적인 측면에서 이를 분석하는데, 공중에 작품을 매단 그의 작업 방식은 이러한 ‘공기’의 존재를 가장 은유적으로 가시화한다.
Aggregation(조합체) 시리즈는 재료가 가지는 물성을 이용해 인간 인식의 문제에 접근하는 작가의 대표작이다. 작가는 무수히 많은 조각으로 하나의 작품을 구성하고, 구상과 추상을 구분 짓는 인식의 경계를 무너뜨린다. 또한 숯을 자연의 이치를 함축하는 가장 순수한 본질이라고 여기는 작가는 회화에서부터 설치 작품에 이르기까지 그의 작업 전반에서 숯을 상징적으로 이용한다. 작가는 숯으로 제작된 설치 작품과 함께 재료의 근원인 나무를 그린 드로잉 작업을 함께 보여주며, 이러한 시각적 병치로 사물의 존재 방식에 대한 작가 고유의 해석을 드러낸다.
더 나아가 작가는 관객이 하나의 감각에 수동적으로 의존하기보다는 여러 감각들을 복합적으로 사용하여 작품을 감상하길 바란다. 작가는 빛을 흡수하지 못하고 모두 투과시키는 아크릴과 크리스털 조각을 조합하여 빛과 공기 요소를 감각적으로 활용하고, 공간에 찬란한 빛의 향연을 선사한다. 또한 그는 빛의 농도와 결정체의 밀도 등을 달리함으로써 보는 이로 하여금 생동하는 빛의 그러데이션을 감상할 수 있도록 한다. 이러한 복합적 감각의 끊임없는 발현은 궁극적으로 인간 본연에 내재한 여러 심리적, 무의식적 반응을 끌어낸다.
박선기는 중앙대학교 조소과를 졸업하고 이탈리아 밀라노의 브레라 국립 미술원에서 수학했다. 이후 이탈리아의 여러 도시에서 주로 활동해 온 작가는 대구보건대학교 인당뮤지엄(2021), 김세중 미술관 (2019), 313 아트프로젝트 (2016), 우양미술관 (2015), 취리히 Galerie Andres Thalmann (2011) 등에서 개인전을 열었다. 또, 부산 시립미술관 (2019), 천안 예술의전당 미술관 (2018), 예술의 전당 한가람미술관 (2017, 2012), 프랑스 물랭 Galleria Continua (2015), 밀라노 Museo della Permanente (2015), 런던 Saatchi Gallery (2012, 2009), 뉴욕 아트앤디자인 박물관 (2011), 서울미술관 (2010) 등에서 그룹전에 참여했다. 그의 작품은 인천국제공항, 신라 호텔을 비롯해 다수의 공공 기관과 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
