Ralph Fleck responded sensitively to the diverse phenomena occurring around him, seeking to express them all through the medium of painting. From vibrant summer scenes crowded with vacationers and urban landscapes centered around narrow alleys, to bookshelves packed with layers of anonymous books—Fleck drew a wide array of objects discovered within his personal experiences into his work. For Fleck, however, the subject matter or motif was merely a tool to consummate the act of painting itself. He consistently endeavored to paint within the boundary of traditional painting, aiming to demonstrate its renewed possibilities in a contemporary art world largely restructured around new media.

By building up thick layers of color on the canvas, Fleck completed his works at the intersection of realism and abstraction, rendered with a powerful sense of matière (impasto). Whether depicting a roaring crowd of faceless spectators, people on a beach, or bookshelves packed with specialized volumes, his canvases always present the viewer with a densely filled landscape. Before painting, Fleck captured these subjects through photography. These photographs, which seize fleeting moments, evolved into paintings through Fleck's creative process. His paintings construct fluid scenes through a static yet dense composition paired with dynamic brushstrokes—a method that allows Fleck to maintain a close relationship with the viewer while simultaneously keeping a certain distance.
