Deux Peintres: Woo Kukwon, Ha Jungwoo

313 아트 프로젝트는 우국원과 하정우의 2인전 <Deux Peintres>를 개최한다. 한 작가는 현실에서 볼 수 없는 환상과 같은 장면을 캔버스로 옮기고 글을 적는다. 다른 한 작가는 실존하는 인물, 브랜드, 사물을 별다른 설명 없이 묵묵히 그려낸다. 그러나 둘다 인간의 내면에 대한 탐구를 담는다는 점에서 그들의 작업은 닮아있다. 우국원 작가는 하정우 작가의 최근 개인전(가나 부산 Next Room)의 전시 서문에서 ‘줄곧 거침없이 당당한 이미지와 달리 그의 의도는 쉽게 알아채기가 어렵다… 어떤 행위의 의미나 목적을 그럴싸하게 만들어 내기보다 차라리 그는 드러내지 않음으로 최선을 다해 솔직했다’라고 하며 둘이 동료 작가로서 각별한 사이임을 드러냈다. 오래 전부터 서로에게 긍정적인 영향을 주는 이 두 작가의 작업을 한 자리에 모아 2인전을 기획했다.

우국원이 그려내는 동화같은 이미지는 나이에 상관없이 모든 관객을 쉽게 끌어들인다. 하지만 그의 작품이 특별한 것은 그 안에 삶을 관통하는 진심 어린 독백들이 함께 있기 때문이다. 굳이 읽히고 싶지 않다는 듯 거칠고 삐뚤게 쓰여 있으나, 문장을 이해한 후에는 웃으며 인정할 수 밖에 없는 내용들이다. 마크 트웨인의 잘 알려진 어록 “The more I know about people the more I like my dog”라든지, 침대를 뒹굴거리며 중얼거리는 “I hate mornings”와 같은 말들은 어른이 되어서야 비로소 온전히 공감할 수 있는, 마냥 가볍고 즐겁지만은 않은 우리의 삶과 그 안에서의 감정에 대해 줄곧 말해왔다.

그러나 이번 전시에서 처음 선보이는 케이크 시리즈에는 최근 태어난 자신의 아이를 보며 느끼는 설렘과 감동을 진솔하게 담아냈다. 아이가 태어나며 삶의 많은 변화를 실감한다는 그는 아이의 탄생을 기쁜 마음으로 축하하는 의미에서 케이크를 화면 한 가운데에 배치했고, 늘 등장하는 하얀 강아지와 함께 엄마와 딸의 모습을 그렸다. 그리고 위트 있고 시니컬한 말 대신 엘튼 존의 “Welcome home”이라는 문구를 넣어 가족을 바라보는 아빠의 따뜻한 마음을 전했다.

20대부터 열정적으로 배우 생활을 하며 한국 최고의 연기자 반열에 오른 하정우는 카메라가 꺼지면 늘 캔버스를 마주하고 앉았다. 자기 자신을 온전히 드러내는 것이 아닌, 영화 속 다른 자아로서의 모습을 보여주는 것이 익숙한 그는 다른 곳에서 하지 못한 이야기들을 그림에 담는다. 그는 자신이 좋아하는 지극히 현실적이고 일상적인 대상들을 묵묵히 그리며 영화 작품 속에서 쌓아둔 감정들을 녹여내고, 새로운 작업을 시작할 수 있는 힘을 얻는다. 그의 작품들은 단순히 페인팅이라는 행위의 흔적이기도 하지만 그가 물감을 통해 얻는 힐링의 결과물이기도 하다.

최근 그가 그린 스포츠 선수들과 식물들은 색감이 더욱 뚜렷해지고 이국적인 향을 뿜어낸다. 연일 해외에서의 촬영에 바쁜 나날을 보내면서도 그는 붓을 놓지 않았다. 그래서일까, 혹자는 그의 작품들을 보고 나면 여행을 다녀온 기분이라고 말하기도 한다. 그가 그림을 통해 공유하고 싶었던 것은 어쩌면 쉼과 고요의 시간 일지도 모른다. 이번 전시에 걸린 그림들은 지금 각각의 두 작가를 가장 가슴 뛰게 하는 대상을 묘사했다. 움직임 없는 스틸 이미지임에도 불구하고 전시장에서 다이내믹한 에너지가 느껴지는 것은 이처럼 두 작가를 설레게 하고 움직이게 하는 것들이 그림 안에 살아있기 때문일 것이다.

313 Art Project is delighted to open <Deux Peintres>, duo show of Woo Kukwon and Ha Jungwoo. One depicts fantasy-like scenes with a touch of handwriting. The other paints recognizable human figures, brands, and objects. Their works resemble each other in that both artists contemplate about human nature and the mind. For the preface of Ha’s recent exhibition (‘Next Room’, Gana Busan), Woo has written: ‘Unlike the nonchalant and confident-looking images, it is hard to read his intention from his paintings… Rather than trying to make up a plausible meaning or purpose, he chose to be honest by not revealing what he had in mind, which showed his affection for the fellow artist. We organized the exhibition by focusing on the positive influence these two artists exchange with one another.

Woo’s fairy tale-like images attract audience from all generations. What makes his works special, however, is the sincere monologues that penetrate life and resonates with us. The sentences in his paintings are written in a rough and crooked manner as if they do not want to be read, but after you understand the meaning, there is no choice but to admit it with a smile. From Mark Twain’s quote “The more I know about people the more I like my dog” to murmurings in bed such as “I hate mornings,” they have always talked about our lives and emotions, though not always light and pleasant. As adults, we resonate with these quotes.

However, in his new series of works featuring cakes for the first time, the artist has expressed his pure excitement and joy as he welcomed his newborn child. With many changes happening in life with the arrival of the baby, he placed a large cake at the center of his painting as a symbol of celebration, and two figures resembling a mother and daughter beside a white dog; the staple protagonist found in his paintings. Instead of his usual quotes of witty and cynical nature, he put Elton John’s “Welcome home” quote to show his heartwarming experience as a dad.

Ha Jungwoo has been acting since his 20s and has now become one of the most celebrated actors in Korea, and he always found himself in front of a canvas when the cameras are off. He is used to showing himself as a different persona in films, so he puts his own story in his paintings that have not been told elsewhere. He quietly paints the most realistic and everyday objects he likes, and through this process the tense emotions he has accumulated during his film work melts down. This also gives him the power to start a new film. His works are not only traces of the act of painting, but also the result of healing that he obtains through paint.

His recently painted sports figures and plants are more vivid in color and exude an exotic scent. Although he was busy filming abroad day after day, he did not let go of his paintbrush. That probably explains why people say that viewing his works feels like being on a journey. What he wanted to share through his paintings may be a time of rest and serenity. The paintings in this exhibition depict the subjects that make each of the two artists the happiest. Despite the still image, the dynamic energy fills the exhibition hall because the things that excite and move these two artists are alive in the paintings.
