USQUAM NUSQUAM (PARTOUT NULLE PART): Je Yeoran Solo Exhibition

313 아트 프로젝트는 제여란의 첫 번째 파리 개인전을 개최한다.

제여란은 1960 년 서울에서 태어난 작가이다. 작가는 30 년 이상 Usquam Nusquam 으로 대표되는 추상화 시리즈에 몰두했다. 작가의 작업은 요동치는 움직임과 내면에 억제되어 있던 감정의 분출의 표현이다. 다양한 색상이 얽히고, 겹쳐지고, 혼합되며 캔버스 전체에 조각과 같은 입체감을 만들어낸다.

작가는 정해진 생각의 틀 없이 작업을 하는 듯 보이나, 사실 그의 페인팅에서는 섬세하게 다뤄진 재료를 통한 다양한 감정을 느낄 수 있다. 매일 아침 명상을 통해 감정을 가다듬고 원하는 상태에 다다를 때까지 정신을 집중한 후, 하루의 작업을 시작한다. 이것은 작가의 작업에서 매우 중요한 단계이다. 그런 다음 작가는 스퀴지를 사용해 물감을 가져다가 캔버스 위에 색을 분출하기 시작하는데, 다소 과장되고 다소 경련적인 몸짓으로 명상을 통해 모은 에너지가 모두 소진될 때까지 캔버스 위에 머문다. 이 작업이 반복됨에 따라 작가의 터치가 쌓여가면서 작품은 서서히 형태를 갖춰간다. 캔버스는 뒤돌아보지 않고 계속해서 형태를 바꿔간다. 이는 작가가 자신의 작업이 끝났다고 느낄 때까지 반복된다.

우리는 작가의 작품을 서양의 액션 페인팅에 비유할 수 있겠으나, 그의 작품에는 지극히 동양적인 요소가 있다. 물감을 쓰기 전 작가는 고요와 풍요의 공백 상태에 다다르려고 노력한다. 그리고 그의 무의식에서, 작가가 만들어낸 거의 초월적인 이 연결 고리 속에서 나오는 움직임들을 캔버스에 반영한다.

그의 그림은 대립감으로 가득 차 있으며, 평온함 속에서 작가는 그 에너지를 모으기도 하고 발산하기도 하는데, 움직임과 색상 모두가 혼합되며 거의 혼란에 가까운 무언가가 만들어진다. 캔버스 속 색상은 가장 어두운 파란색에서부터 가장 밝은 흰색까지 아우른다. 그러나 궁극적으로 이러한 모든 대립감에서 균형이 탄생하고, 혼돈에서 조화가 탄생한다.

작가의 그림을 보는 관람객은 먼저 전체적인 이미지를 파악하고, 그 후 물감들이 만들어낸 고랑, 부조, 작품 속 특정 요소나 색상 등의 디테일에 시선이 머물 것이다. 어떤 설명도, 어떤 조형적인 요소에도 구애받지 않고 각각의 모티브에서 나오는 감각과 고유한 인상만이 존재한다. 이 순간 비로소 제여란의 작품이 의미를 갖게 되고, 관객들은 작품 앞에서 각자의 해석과 감정을 마음속 깊은 곳 어디에선가 끌어낸다.

제여란은 홍익대학교에서 미술 석사 학위를 취득했고, 대학원 시절 이우환, 최명영, 윤형근 작가로부터 받은 지도는 오늘날까지 작가의 작업에 영향을 주고 있다. 2019 년 서울 313 아트프로젝트, 2018 년 통영 시립 전혁림미술관, 2016 년 파주 미메시스미술관, 2015 년 대구 인당미술관에서의 개인전 및 서울 국립현대미술관, 도쿄 국립미술관, 오사카 국제박물관, 싱가포르 ICAS 박물관, 서울 금호미술관에서 그룹전에 참여했다. 독일 루드비히 파운데이션, 한국 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 파라다이스 그룹 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

313 Art Project is honored to present Je Yeoran’s first solo show in Paris.

Je Yeoran is a South Korean artist born in Seoul in 1960. For over thirty years she has developed an abstract painting style as presented by the iconic series Usquam Nusquam (Anywhere Nowhere). Je Yeoran’s work forms a unique material of abstract art, through the repetition of sinuous movements and ruptures, where the different colors intertwine, overlap, and mix to create a whole relief on canvas.

Je Yeoran approaches her paintings without a predefined notion. She, however, chooses a palette of colors, according to her feelings at the very moment (influenced by her emotions as well as the weather, the luminosity…), then prepares the material meticulously. Using a squeegee, she takes the paint, and with ample and jerky gestures, applies this material to the canvas. Then she starts again, and touch after touch, the work takes shape, each motion transforming the canvas. These follow one another until the artist feels her work is finished.

Je Yeoran’s works are comparable to the western style of action painting, but there is something profoundly Far Eastern about her work. Before applying the material, the artist creates a vacuum to reach a state of calmness and fullness by connecting with environment around her. Then she reflects on the canvas these movements that are formed from this almost transcendent link that she establishes with her unconsciousness.

Her paintings are filled with antagonism, yet among the calmness she unleashes the energy on canvas, creating chaos where everything mixes, in both movements and colors. The colors are from the darkest of blue, to the brightest of white. Ultimately from the chaos a balance is formed, and harmony is the end result.

The observer contemplating one of his paintings will first distinguish an overview, then his gaze will be attracted by such or such a detail, will follow this furrow, will traverse this relief, appreciate an element, a color, etc… There will be no explanation, no figurative element to cling to, but a sensation emerging from each motif, a unique impression specific to each being. This is when Je Yeoran’s work takes on its full meaning, each viewer has their own interpretation, their own emotions in front of their work, drawn from the depths of each person.

Je Yeoran graduated with a master’s degree in Fine Arts from Hongik University in Seoul. The guidance she received from artists Lee Ufan, Choi Myoung Young, and Yun Hyong-Keun during her graduate school days has influenced her work to this day. She presented solo exhibitions at the Jeon Hyucklim Museum of Art in Tongyeong in 2018, at the Mimesis Art Museum in Paju in 2016, and at the Indang Museum in Daegu in 2015. She also had a solo exhibition at 313 Art Project in Seoul in 2019. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, at the National Museum of Art in Tokyo, at the International Museum in Osaka, the ICAS Museum in Singapore, and the Kumho Museum in Seoul.
