Jon Kessler’s works often combine centuries-old analog mechanism with digital technology to explore the consumerism in “post-Utopian” society. In his earlier works, the themes are centered around regional reciprocity and relational tension between the Occident and the Orient. After the year 2000, especially after the 9/11 incident in New York, he started to present works reflecting on his agony as a New York-based artist. He critically looked into the meaningless by-products of war, and concepts such as death and isolation. Here, the artist revealed the problems of modern society through means of mechanic movements and processes.
Kessler, well known for his use of Kinetic Art that expresses an object’s movement through high-tech mechanism, analyzes from his artistic perspective the dark side of modern technological advancement and takes it as a motif for his works. He often envisages a dynamic world of oeuvre with sculptures and installations. He also produces filmed works using video camera of kinetic elements, widening the spectrum of the genre of works. As his works are based on modern civilization which predominates contemporary human life, the viewers might be astonished with the brilliant progress of technology, yet at the same time experiencing fear, threatened of their own existence.
Kessler held solo exhibitions around the world at places including The Web, Institute, New York (2013), Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, New York (2012), Macro Testaccio, Rome, Italy (2011), Fisher Landau Center for Art, New York (2010), Deitch Project, New York (2009), Louisiana Museum of Moderne Kunst, Copenhagen (2008), The Drawing Center, New York (2007),Phoenix Kulturstiftung / Falckenberg Collection, Hamburg (2006), P.S1, New York (2005) and etc. Whilst his group exhibitions include Julia Stoschek Collection, Dusseldorf, Germany (2011), Museum Jean Tinguely Basel, Basel (2010), Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2007), CA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2007), The Museum for Modern Art, Zurich (2006), The Whitney Museum of Art, New York (2005) and many more. 기계적 메커니즘을 통해 사물의 움직임을 표현하는 키네틱 아트(Kinetic Art)의 대가로도 잘 알려진 케슬러는, 현대 기술 발전의 이면을 작가의 시선으로 분석하고 이를 작품의 주제로 삼는다. 그는 주로 조각과 설치를 통해 동적인 작품 세계를 설계하는데, 키네틱 부품들로 구성된 카메라를 사용한 영상 작업을 하는 등 다양한 장르의 스펙트럼을 보여준다. 현대인의 삶에 절대적 우위를 차지하는 현대 문명을 대상으로 작업했기에 작품을 감상하는 관객들은 눈부신 기술 발전에 감탄하기도 하지만, 이와 동시에 존재에 대한 위협을 느끼고 두려움을 체험하게 된다.
존 케슬러는 뉴욕 The Webb Institute(2013), 서울 313 아트프로젝트 (2012), 뉴욕 Ethan Cohen Fine Arts(2012), 뉴욕 Fisher Landau Center for Art(2010) 등에서 개인전을 열었고, 그룹 전시로는 독일 뒤셀도르프 Julia Stoschek Collection(2011), 스위스 바젤 Museum Jean Tinguely Basel(2010) 등이 있다. 현재 그의 작품은 뉴욕 The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)와 The Brooklyn Museum, 런던 Saatchi Collection, 시카고 Museum of Contemporary Art, 뉴욕 The Whitney Museum of Art, 로스앤젤레스 Museum of Contemporary Art 외에 세계 주요 미술관 및 기관과 컬렉터들이 소장하고 있다.
