Suejin Chung’s paintings explore the unfamiliar dimensions between vision and cognition, seeking to establish a "multidimensional plane" that manifests solely through the inseparable interaction of color and form. The "Budo Theory," independently formulated by the artist, introduces the "Budo Code"—a systemization of the foundational units of form—enabling precise identification and structural analysis of visual shapes. This marks a significant semiotic and formalist achievement, departing from the narrative-driven or emotionally fraught contextualism that has long characterized contemporary Korean art, and shifting toward an objective mode of thinking centered strictly on formal structure. Her paintings and theoretical texts clearly demonstrate that the structure of visual art is not an arbitrary occurrence, but is instead grounded in the inherent strata of intentional human consciousness.

However, this rigorous structural framework and dialectical logic operate as a profound duality within Chung's practice. While the heterogeneous iconography arranged non-hierarchically across a grid and the dense configuration of her Brain Sea series generate an intense visual tension, they simultaneously risk reducing painting to a detached, sterile diagram illustrating a theory. The conceptual excess and semiotic precision dominating the canvas reveal a clear limitation, inadvertently obstructing and suppressing the pure plastic intuition and material liberation that the viewer should immediately experience through the painterly medium. Nonetheless, her theoretical and artistic experiments—striving so fiercely to recalibrate the paradoxical relationship between sight and perception—stand as a singular achievement that compels a critical reconsideration of the structural value of contemporary painting.
